Exploring with Magnets

Summary

The lesson started with students doing an open exploration of magnets in the classroom and creating a chart about what they discovered. Students were introduced to key vocabulary terms- magnet, attract, repel, and then spent time exploring magnets in small groups through various stations. The activities integrated scientific investigation with technology, creativity, writing, and music. Students kept a journal that they recorded observations in as they explored in stations.

TIPC Ratings

Students used magnet books, websites, and magnets for hands-on experimentations for their research. After researching on magnets, students had to determine which objects would repel and which would attract to the magnet.

Students collaborated in small teacher selected groups to complete experiments. Next, students completed assignments about the magnets. One was in Pixie, some were on paper.

Students were asked to explain why they thought certain objects would attract to a magnet. Students were also asked why we needed magnets and what might happen if we no longer had magnets in the world. Students then drew their answers in Pixie while the teacher wrote their dictated answers.

Students explored magnets using a variety of different resources and learning styles. They responded to teacher directions to complete class assignments. Students had some choice with using Pixie to complete assignments or drawing assignments on paper.
