Summary
Students will create a unique comic that reflects the plot of the story. They will read a literature pairing (“The Gift of the Magi” and “Anonymous Acts of Kindness Catch On”), discuss it, identify connections, and locate sentence levels (simple, independent, and complex sentence). They will then draw a plot pyramid and label the corresponding parts from “The Gift of the Magi” on the pyramid. As the culmination of their study of these pairings and the concept of selflessness, the students will create a comic on toondoo.com that details the plot of “The Gift of the Magi.” They will create the comic with a partner. The comic should consist of 8 panels and can focus on several scenes or one scene. The comic measures the students’ comprehension of the story and overall unit.
TIPC Ratings
Entry- Although they read an article from a search engine, the teacher chose the article and posed the question. At this point in their discovery, they were still learning about the topic and benefited from a partially teacher directed lesson. They did, however, evaluate and make connections from the article to the story in a group discussion.
Approaching – The teacher modeled positive communication and collaboration techniques, and, as a class, they discussed ways to work together effectively, as well as different roles to assume during the project. The students received basic directions on toondoo and a rubric but had to navigate the program and creation of the comic as a team by ultimately creating an original work.
Approaching. While the teacher presented the initial unit question, students had to develop their own questions and concerns regarding the texts. They had to navigate the program on their own and discover ways to represent the story visually. Additionally, they had to work together to identify each other’s strengths and assign roles in the process. The students had to answer open-ended questions during the lesson and use a resource to create a project.
Ideal/target. Students had minimal guidelines to follow for the project and no samples to view. Instead, they created their comic based on their own interpretation of the story by utilizing all the colors and objects to enhance their understanding of the plot. The final product is a creative work that reflects and enhances
