Submitted by: Joy McDonald, ITRT
School: Hungary Creek Middle

Summary

Using 7 primary sources, students will assume the role of a Boston news reporter to report an account of the events, according to the testimony of eye-witnesses to the Boston Massacre. Students will work in teams to investigate an eyewitness account from either the loyalist or the patriot perspective. They will compose a title and a short news article, which summarizes the events (from only one perspective) on a post-first discussion forum on schoolspace. Once they have posted, they will read reports from other Boston newspapers (student posts on the same discussion forum). After reading reports from other perspectives, they are to draft an update or extension to their original article by replying to their own post.

TIPC Ratings

Not intended to be a component of this short lesson, which focuses on communication and collaboration. (Approaching) Students work in selected teams to compose a news article based on eyewitness accounts from the Boston Massacre, using a schoolspace discussion forum. Each team must determine roles for accomplishing this task, which becomes more challenging as students must interpret 16th century English text in order to compose their report. (Approaching) Students must think critically as they read 16th century English text (primary sources) in order to investigate eyewitness reports of a crime (Boston Massacre). In addition, they will have to analyze the reports of their peers and compose a report, which takes into account the multiple perspectives surrounding this event. (Developing) Students had to summarize a historical event, using the highly biased eyewitness accounts from the time period. In addition, by answering the essential questions in a class discussion, they must connect events from the past to the contemporary issue of eyewitness reporting.
