Summary
After a brief overview of how I run the school store, the students will determine the cost of certain items and determine what they think the selling price should be. Based on their selling price, they will then determine what the amount of profit will be. Students will then go to the Sam’s Club website (www.samsclub.com) and look for other items they think we should sell. Once they find an item, they will go to a Google Doc and tell me the name of the item, price, potential profit, and why they feel I should sell it in the school store. After finding their item, the students will create a new flyer and price sheet for the school store using software they feel comfortable using (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Publisher most likely). We will then use the information the students submitted in the Google Doc to create a survey they can use to ask students at lunch what they would like to see us sell in the school store.
TIPC Ratings
Students were assigned website, Sam’s Club, to browse for information about products them want to add to the inventory at the Academy School Store. Students discussed the price of the product and what they thought they should charge in order to make a profit. They also had to look at the products that were already sold at the store to make sure they were not duplicating their existing inventory. Students use Google Documents to share their finding which included item, price, potential profit, and why they thought it should be sold in the school store.
Students will be able to work in small groups to complete this project. They looked at the profit margin in the existing inventory to decide what they should charge for the new products. Students conducted very lively conversations about what products they thought the student body would be interested in purchasing and how they should be priced. All this information was shared using Google Documents. They also created a survey to be completed by the student body during lunch to determine which products they out like to be added to the store.
Students are able to make decisions about the school store just as a manager would in a real store. They have to decide which product would sell, set prices, determine inventory, and advertise the school store. The students had to look at their cliental to determine which items they would be interested in purchasing, pay close attention to how much they could charge and what would be their profit margin. They had to make sure that there was diversity in items and that there would not be competition in selected items so they could ensure movement. At first students looked at items they liked but they soon realize that they had to justify their decision for the good of the store.
The students have varying computer knowledge in the class so they will be able to use the computer to create flyers and prices for the school store. The students are able to choose the software they are most comfortable with in order to create the flyer and price list. They also had to create flyers to advertise new items that were sold.
