Summary
This lesson addresses the advantages/ disadvantages of emails. Society has started to forget what people look like, how they act, the way they sound, etc. Just because it is new technology does not mean it is flawless technology. This lesson connects students to the literature “There Will Come Soft Rains,” because we then read a story about a house that is set in the year 2026 is it full of new technologies. This house is automatic. It does everything for the humans. It cooked breakfast for them, it told them the weather every morning, it turned their beds down and even ran their baths. It relates to everyday life where thermostats “determine” when it was time to turn up or down and how traffic lights change based on traffic patters. Using Google SketchUp, students will create their own house of the future with five features that they would want their house to do automatically. The program allows them to draw, construct, create and manipulate objects to create the items they need/want in their house and share it with their classmates.
TIPC Ratings
Developing — Students were able to locate and acquire information using provided resources such as their literature book and their laptops. Using these two resources they were able to reflect back on the story in order to create their own house on their laptops.
Developing — Students worked individually on their project but collaborated with each other to create their final product. The students communicated with one another inside and outside the classroom, suggesting ideas and the actual manipulation of the program.
Developing — Students used technology independently to solve problems they had about using the program. The students engaged in open-ended learning experiences asking questions throughout the story about particular things the house was doing or why does a nuclear bomb clear out everything?
Approaching — Students were able to apply critical thinking, research methods, communication to create their own work. They were able to use the program effectively because many of them had used the program before. They were able to draw on past experiences to complete this particular project. They collaborated effectively with each other during lunch and when they returned they created the project more easily.
