The objective of the “Can you hear me now?” unit is to provide students with the tools to effectively and powerfully express themselves. This creative and informational unit will develop student centered learning as the students discover and explore a variety of nonfiction texts and produce unique works within the nonfiction genre. Through the unit, students will continue practicing the fundamentals of English, reinforcing SOL and SAT test taking strategies, and collaborating for a common goal. From 6 word memoirs, impromptu debates and persuasive letters, this lesson does it all with the student as the creator after understanding the concepts. As a goal of nonfiction is to entertain while informing, there is nothing more powerful than providing students with tools to share their voice at such a pivotal age.

Focus Lesson: This specific part of the unit focuses on impromptu debates.

Students will research a “hot topic” with a focus on credible information, fact v. opinion, and debate skills

DEVELOPING: The teacher directly instructs on search techniques as this is the first lesson on analysis of information sources. The teacher leads instruction on how to determining the authority of sources. This occurs through the students locating and analyzing the connecting article through use of the graphic organizer.

DEVELOPING: Students are provided with opportunities to work in in groups, via the debate, on class assignments. The teacher provides the structure for the “lined” debate.

APPROCHING: Students are provided with the skills to research and respond critically to purposeful problems through using their research to create a debate. The teacher creates instructional opportunities to promote student created solutions to authentic tasks. The students are provided with proper scaffolding support as they begin to practice their research skills and purposeful problems.

APPROACHING: Students are provided with the opportunity to research, analyze, synthesize, communicate, and critically think about an authentic task that impacts their world. The use of a debate allows the students to demonstrate original solutions to an authentic problem.
