School: Deep Run High School

Summary

In this lesson, computer science students will apply the concept of selection control to the conjugation of regular verbs in a chosen foreign language. They will work with a partner to design and write a user-friendly Java program that will conjugate verbs. After completion of the Java program, the students will work on creating an educational Scratch game that uses selection control and tests the user’s ability to conjugate verbs. Finally, students will bring their programs and games to a foreign language class and see their work put to use in an educational setting.

TIPC Ratings

This lesson is approaching as students examine other Scratch Games before solidifying their own ideas. Students also use their Java resources such as the method documentation and Oracle website to assist in their program design.

This lesson is approaching as students work together on this project. They also keep a journal to help them better understand their thinking and programming processes, as well as share their projects with younger students in world language classes.

This lesson is approaching as critical thinking is essential to the design of any good computer program. As students begin to implement their algorithms in their programs, they encounter problems throughout the process and have to work together to solve these problems.

This lesson is approaching in creativity because at the time of this project, students have limited knowledge of writing Java programs and Scratch programs. For some students, their initial designs of the program and the game may have been beyond what they were able to code, so they may have to had to pare down their creative and innovative ideas to manageable tasks.
