The Storm is Coming

Summary

Students worked in groups across the grade level to create a complete weather filmed report; before, during and after a storm. The students were required to collaborate with their group in order to create a newsroom and an in the field script using Google Docs for the weather report. They then filmed, edited, and collaboratively produced a mock weather broadcast.

TIPC Ratings

The students were given one aspect of their storm to research in order to appropriately collaborate all needed research information. The students were guided to select their information from various resources including literature, One Search, Discovery Science, and actual weather clips viewed whole class.


The students effectively communicated via the chat room on Google Docs while collaboratively creating and editing their script. Teachers observed and appropriately directed chats between multiple classrooms.

Students used research to create a comprehensive weather report based on meteorological weather facts. Students used their gained knowledge of storm research to solve issues that arise before, during, and after a storm.

Students used their research to creatively and accurately portray a news anchor or field person during a fictitious news weather report.
