Schedule:
Each school will create and implement their own schedule for student training. Consult that schedule for specific dates and times for implementation.
Format:
- There are 8 major topics in student training.
- Each topic is listed under “student training” and can be accessed from that tab.
- Teachers will implement each topic on the list with students.
- The topics are designed to be interactive and there is some flexibility in how teachers implement them.
- Each topic contains an overview, objectives, materials needed, step-by-step directions, video tutorials, and assessments.
- Each topic will end with an “End of Topic” graphic at the end of the post.
Implementation:
- Follow your schools schedule to implement topics on specific days.
- As teachers implement topics with students they can choose to display videos for the class as a whole or have students use headphones and view the videos on their own (6th graders may need more support with the topics).
- Each topic contains specific steps that outline exactly what students need to do. Teachers have some choice in the strategies they use to guide students through the steps.
- Teachers should preview the topics prior to implementing them with students and ask the ITRT clarifying questions as needed.
- It is important that each student complete the assigned topic in full.
- Some schools will use an assessment at the end of each topic to help reinforce the learning. These assessments will be in School Space in school student community groups. ITRTs will notify teachers at participating schools and send the directions for accessing assessments.
Materials Needed:
- Laptops (students/teachers)
- Login information for laptops/School Space (students)
- Internet connection/ Tech Tips
- Projector (teachers- to project video tutorials)
- Speakers (teachers- to play audio in videos – as desired)
- Headphones (students – to view video tutorials – as desired)
- Patience – don’t forget this will be new for our 6th graders and more of a review for 7th and 8th (watch for new to HCPS 7/8th graders).
Implementation Tips/Suggested Strategies:
- Preview topics prior to teaching.
- Determine how you want to implement before implementation.
- When steps have video tutorials that demonstrate the direction download show the video to the whole class or demonstrate the step prior to having students complete it.
- Partner more seasoned users with new users.
- Have students work in teams and use the directions on one computer to complete setup on partners computer and then switch. This will allow students to practice the steps together.
- Empower your students. Use students who finish/understand tasks to help support others in the classroom. They can be the extra set of hands you need.
- Load the videos prior to using them. This will help reduce the load time for the video.
- Ask questions, have discussions with students, and be open to support. They are often our best resources!
