A Rock’s Journey

This creative end-product lesson involves a high-level of collaboration among group members to conceptualize a “story” of a rock travelling through geologic time while describing the processes that occur along the way. Students are heavily invested in higher level thinking of Blooms Taxonomy as they apply and synthesize our entire first semester of geology while creating a “story” that reflects the students’ knowledge, creativity, and personalities. In this multi-phased project, students will be actively engaged in real world tasks of meeting deadlines, collaborative group management, and creating a novel product that will be shared and used in a variety of ways. The project opens with an introduction, partner selection, and establishing collaborative-management. Phase two includes rock personalization/character creation (either virtually or with an actual rock), brainstorming, and reflection. The storyline involves brainstorming, outlining, researching, and product creation. The final step is presenting and sharing. Students can communicate, assign tasks, and combine research on a Google Doc form. The students’ products will be shared both electronically for the class to use as a review study tool for SOL’s and their masterpieces will also be presented to the class. In addition, to add further authenticity that expands beyond the walls of our classroom, students will also share their knowledge and creativity with our neighboring elementary schools. The fourth and fifth grade SOL’s are very similar to our own, so the teachers can use our products as a fun way to introduce or teach their own students.

To My Mama

I started this movie in late October of 2011; I was coming up with ideas for my Mother’s birthday. I not only created it all by myself but I got more than fifteen people in on it without her knowing. I got a card with more than thirty birthday signatures, including35 dollars. This also was the first project I did without having help from my audio, video assistant partner. In this video I included friends from our church, family members and actual footage of friends wishing Levetta a happy birthday. Everything was off script and was from the heart. This was the biggest birthday surprise she had ever had. This video is not only a personal gift to my mother but is also art created from the heart Of Evynn N.

To create my project, I inserted pictures into movie maker using a SD card. I recorded the footage with a HD camera recorder. I converted songs using the YouTube URL into the movie maker’s timeline. I published the project from movie maker into a wmv file which you can view in the program windows media player.

Advertising Agency – Shake and Smart

Everyday working professionals develop innovative, authentic, and original ideas and products. In the 21st century, creators of these products have many choices when it comes to deciding which resources to use to bring their ideas and products to life. Over the course of two class periods, we covered the essentials of persuasive techniques while examining these techniques by watching and grading professionally-produced advertisements for magazines, radio stations, and television. After the students had mastered the basic concepts of persuasive writing and the importance of oral, visual, and written language that is essential to advertising, the focus for this part of the unit was for students to take an active role as producers of their choice of persuasive artifacts (magazine ads, radio commercials, or television commercials), choosing the resource (MovieMaker, GoAnimate, Adobe Premier, Audacity, iTunes, OneNote, Word, Publisher, etc.) that their team felt was the most effective for producing the artifact they chose to create. Each class would have a ‘simulated advertising agency environment’ to design products and create advertisements for them. Not only did we advertise the products and score those advertising artifacts in class, we had advertising, sales, and marketing professionals from our local community visit Short Pump Middle School to critique and give advice to the agencies.

Science Investigations: Energy Conservation

psa

Students made a public service announcement (PSA) that dealt with an environmental topic that was addressed in the documentary, The 11th Hour. The topic had to be one that had solutions to it and ways to combat the problem. The PSA also had to be creative and interesting since the target group was teenagers and how they can help change the way the environment is used.

GAHS Center Website

centersitepic

Students in the Technology & Communications in the 21st Century classes took on the difficult task of creating an original website about the center of education and human development from their perspective. Rather than using some of the web design tools that are available to them, they created the entire site using HTML coding. Each class created the site, the verbiage, and movies embedded on various pages. After the site was published, it was presented to the center chair and ITRT who gave feedback on the design and content of each page. The students took that information and continued to “tweak” their pages until it was to their satisfaction. After the editing process was complete, the center chair and teacher chose the pages from each class that best represented the center to be featured on the main center site.

Composite Imagery

Ian_Color-Experiment

In this particular computer art project, students were tasked with finding 2 different colorful images to overlap in an artistic way. Next, they applied an artistic filter, adjusted the color, and blended the composite picture using Adobe Photoshop. They repeated this process 3 times to create 1 final image. Ian and Nat exceeded the expectations with their imagery by using multiple layering effects and images. Since finishing this project, Ian has begun creating composites of his friends names at their request. This assignment is easily reproduced on our HCPS student laptops in Photoshop Elements. It is also a technique used in mixed media studio art. See what kind of interesting imagery you can come up with by challenging yourself to this composite picture project!

Staff READ Posters

readposterstudent21

Students in a first year computer art class were tasked with merging teacher photos with “READ” poster backgrounds. The librarian took the initial pictures and then shared them with the computer art class. From there, students had to remove the background using photoshop tools and place the teachers into a READ poster. Once the posters were finished they were shared back with the library staff who are blowing up the posters to be sold as a fundraiser. These two students showed exceptional skill in photoshop and took artistic license as is evident in the posters. Sam H. did a great job of removing background without a trace of the original. He kept the lines smooth around the teacher and decided to add wings so the subject was not “floating” in space. Mitchell C. worked exceptionally hard on taking 2 different pictures of one teacher and merging them into one poster as a reflection. Some students took the liberty of creating their own background, lettering or special effects as seen in Aidan B.. This allowed them the freedom of their own creativity.
