Update for Week of: November 5th, 2018

I hope you made the most of your extra hour this weekend and are adjusting to the change in time. This week we will be another busy week. We will be working on our inquiry-based projects in Science and dig deeper by choosing animals from our habitats to research further into our ecosystems. The students are excited about collaborating with their peers to create projects to share.

In language arts, we will continue research but also review fact and opinion. During our writing time, we will be finalizing writing friendly letters by completing final drafts of letters to those serving in the military. Our focus in math will be single and multi-step word problems, as well as continuing to explore strategies in addition and subtraction.  This week, we will also introduce zero and one times tables in anticipation of multiplication and division unit later this month.

Lastly, thank you for all those parents meeting with me today or tomorrow for parent-teacher conferences. Collaboration and communication between parent and teacher is a huge advantage for the success of your student. I appreciate your time given to their success. “Together may we give our children the roots to grow and the wings to fly.” Anonymous

November 11th is Veterans Day, and KES students, teachers, staff and parents would like to invite all men and women who are currently serving or who have served in the Armed Forces to join us for an assembly on Friday, Nov. 9th from 9:00-10:00 AM.  This annual event is special for our school as we honor, recognize and celebrate all those who have made a difference in our lives.  If you are a veteran and are able to attend our assembly, then we ask that you complete a registration form located on our school’s website (click on Veterans Day Registration) or visit the site directly at https://goo.gl/forms/y0KVH2HZa2QesYb83   Please register as soon as possible but no later than Wed, November 7th.  During the assembly each guest veteran will be introduced and asked to stand to be recognized.  Guest veterans are encouraged, but not required, to wear their uniforms for the assembly. KES students and staff will be wearing red, white and blue.  All veteran guests will have reserved seating and sit with their KES student. All veterans should report to the front foyer of the school to check in before the assembly.  Our assembly will begin promptly at 9:00 AM.

In addition to recognizing guest veterans during our assembly, our school will participate in two other experiences to honor and support our veterans.  First, we will create a visual representation in our school’s hallway to honor men and women who have served our country in the past or who are currently serving but may not be able to attend our assembly.  Second, our KES community will partner with Blue Star Families and the USO to collect items to be sent to our deployed troops. Please review the list of needed items and begin shopping now:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BmdTd_kVFtc0BFqeQ_ypUczyX4koK7vQo7mGt1FuEzs/edit?usp=sharing   Thank you for your generosity in the past with our troop collection, and we hope this year we can collect enough items to pack lots of boxes to send to the troops.

Personal items:
deodorant/antiperspirant, toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, Gold Bond foot powder, socks, hand sanitizer, sunscreen, Q-tips

Snacks:
powdered drink mixes, coffee, Kool-aid, Crystal Light, power bars, instant oatmeal, pop tarts, crackers, cookies, tuna/chicken in foil packages, individual snack packs such as nuts, dried fruit, beef jerky, trail mix

Reading material:

Scholastic book orders will be sent home on Wednesday along with weekly progress folders. These will be due on November 16th. You can order online atscholastic.com/bookclubs using classroom code: N88JP.

We will have our class spelling bees within the next two weeks. Teachers will make sure that everyone is here in order for all to be able to participate. We will use the Spelling Bee Notes and Classroom Pronouncer Guide to administer our class bee. Each class will have one participant qualify for the school-wide bee on November 27th. We will also have a runner-up in case the winner is not available on that day.

In our classroom, we are using a program called Study Island, an online learning resource that will help students with standards mastery. Because Study Island is web-based, students will be able to continue their learning outside of the classroom. Students will occasionally be assigned a graded lesson that covers skills being taught in class. The students are given time throughout the week in school to complete the activities and can also work on them at home.

Cold Weather Reminder: Please remind your child to dress appropriately for the weather.  Please be sure to label all layered clothing. If is much easier for items to be returned if it has your child’s name in it. We also have many students with the same jackets, too.
