Week of October 15th, 2018

This week during reading, we will begin understand and identify how nonfiction text features help us in reading. We will practice getting information from recipes, invitations, diagrams, written directions, etc. Our focus skill for English will be adverbs. Please continue to practice all covered parts of speech with your student when reviewing each night. These skills are review from 2nd grade but many students have not fully mastered them yet. In order to maximize writing skills, basic parts of speech should be mastered. In math, we will test on place value and rounding on MONDAY, Oct. 15th. Students have had extra days of instruction and should be ready to take the test. Don’t forget to continue practicing addition and subtraction facts; students should be fluent in all addition and subtraction facts. In social studies, we will continue to exploring geography.  Please be aware that new standards have been added to 3rd grade curriculum, students must be able to name the important landforms and rivers on each continent.           Last week, permission slips for our first field trip came home. Permission forms must be signed and returned. This year KES parents have the option of paying for field trips online.  Please visit http://osp.osmsinc.com/HenricoVA to set-up an account. Please click the following link for specific directions: KES: Online School Payments. On Tuesday November 13th, we will be visiting the Virginia Living Museum to learn more about animals, adaptations, and ecosystems. Chaperones will be chosen on October 23rd. Please wait until you have be contacted before sending in money to cover that cost.

Do you know your students have many online resources at their fingertips?  Your students have been given their usernames and passwords for the resources that we have begun using.  Please let us know if you have difficulty accessing resources at home or have any questions.  Please support and collaborate with us in teaching your students safe and responsible use of these online resources.  Please feel free to explore our resources with your students, too. Personal password should never be shared and should be only used by you and your student.

KES Scholastic Book Fair has been extended for one more day!  If you didn’t get a chance to visit the book fair last week, then you have one last chance on Monday, October 15th from 2:30-7:30 PM.
