First grade sight word list – by week

Homework is a great way for students to develop independent, life-long learning skills. Students should take increasing responsibility for managing their homework each night. They are also responsible for packing and unpacking every day, both at school and at home. Please make sure your child has an organized area to go through his/her backpack and take care of papers and homework. Over-involvement can be a bad thing. Please let me know if you are having to consistently help your child with homework, or if it takes much longer than 30 minutes to complete. Feel free to email me  or send a message through the remind app if you have specific questions and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Homework tips:
1. Be a supporter. Make sure your child feels good about the accomplishment of finishing homework. Be sure to go over the assignments to check for accuracy and praise your child for all the hard work that has been done.
2. Be a stage manager. Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to do homework. Make sure the needed materials (paper, pencils, etc.) are available. Make the location consistent. Make it his/her own place that he/she is more likely to enjoy being in.
3. Be a motivator. Homework provides a great opportunity for you to tell your child how important school is. Be positive about homework. The attitude you express about homework will be the attitude your child acquires.
4. Be a role model. If your child is reading, try to sit and read as well. If your child is doing math, maybe balance your checkbook. Help your child see that the skills they are practicing are related to things you do as an adult.
5. Be a monitor. Watch your child for signs of failure and frustration. If frustration sets in, suggest a short break.
