Week 22 Update

Oh boy, did we have a busy week in first grade! đŸ˜€ Pictures here.

The highlight of the week was getting to video chat with Detroit artist Tyree Guyton about the Heidelberg Project. We learned about the hardships faced during Guyton’s youth, and how he overcame the sadness from the destruction of his hometown neighborhood. His story and artistic vision truly inspired all of us! On Monday we are going to create a mural together out of repurposed materials that represents Trevvett!

We had a fun Valentine’s Day together! It was so sweet seeing everyone spread love with chocolates, treats, and cards! Thank you to the parents who came in to help during the party and sent in goodies!

We learned about equal shares, halves and fourths in math this week. We continued learning about important African American figures for black history month by reading multiple biographies. We read a fun book about a cranky boy, Crankenstein, who despises Valentine’s Day until someone special comes along. The student’s Crankenstein crafts look so cute! We learned about the -ai/-ay pattern for phonics, and started our matter unit in science. We visited the 4th grade African-American living history museum to learn all about famous movers and shakers!
