Welcome to 2016-2017 5th grade families! I’m excited to have your child! I am trying some new things this year and I am thrilled for your child to be a part of it. Many of you have been in or heard about the flexible seating that I am doing in my classroom this year. Students are able to choose their best learning spot and move when necessary.
We also participated in International Dot Day this past week. Students were inspired to make their mark in the world.
I’m looking forward to a great year with your child!IMG_20160915_130138526_HDRIMG_20160906_170212849

Two of my 5th grade students were lucky enough to be selected to participate in Henrico 21 this year. Jordyn and Evan shared a project that we had completed in class using the iPad. They drew the ocean floor using the app Pixie. Once they were finished we uploaded it to another app Tellagami. Tellagami allows you to put your voice to an avatar that moves. They did a great job sharing at Henrico 21.IMG_4565

We have been working diligently for several weeks on an Ocean Review project using Tellagami and Pixie on the iPads. See if you can tell which one belongs to your child. They had a great time making them and reviewing.

Christian’s rock cycle project that was completed on Prezi was selected to showcase at the Henrico 21 event tonight at Glen Allen High School. We had a great time showing people all about his project. He represented Donahoe well! Great job!

Students worked in groups today to design & build a freestanding structure that has a track on which a marble can travel. They were awarded points. They could only use the materials that they were given. Take a look at what your creative children came up with!IMAG0472 IMAG0473 IMAG0474 IMAG0475 IMAG0476 IMAG0477

Today we completed a lab during science. We have been learning many things about the ocean. Today’s lab included showing how cold water is heavier than warm water & how the current moves. They did a great job and really enjoyed the lab.IMAG0167 IMAG0166 IMAG0165 IMAG0163 IMAG0161

My class began studying the ocean floor on Thursday. Friday we made a model of the ocean floor while working in groups. Each person had a job in their group. It was wonderful to hear them working together to solve problems that came up while trying to make these. They worked very hard to make their project look like the ocean floor.

Mike was working with the dough to get it to fit, while Keely & Anthony figure out what to do with the box.
