Through our word study program, Word Journeys, students learn word patterns through focusing on specific word features and use them effectively in their writing and reading. In the September letter that was sent home regarding our school-wide implementation of this program, it stated “Unlike traditional spelling tests, students will be expected to be able to spell the words on their cards in addition to other words with the same features. This transfer of knowledge is critical as they develop as a reader and writer.” If a student is able to apply these features in their written work, then they have internalized and mastered the features. Our instruction will continue, yet our next stage of implementation is to weekly assess the students on the application of their features where they will be called a list of words to write. Some will be words worked on during the week in addition to other words with the same features.
