kindergarten is awesome! 6/1/18

Happy Friday everyone!

It is so nice to see the sunshine today!   A happy reminder that we are sooooo excited to sing to all of you this Wednesday, June 6th at 8:15 am.   Please just  sign in at the office and go right to the gym.  We will come into the gym at 8:15 ready to  perform.  Each child in our class will also have a line to say(with a friend) to introduce a song.  Our kids are just darling!

We are having fun making our Father’s Day gifts this week!!!  Our kids will take them home on Monday and find a place to hide them until Father’s Day.  Our kids LOVE their dads!!!!  I hope you all enjoy your special gift.

Next week we will continue learning about spiders and insects.  We will be going on a bug hunt, taking pictures and exploring outside.  If anyone has a bug net or insect holder, please feel free to send it in on Monday with your child.  Of course we will be in our science lab coats, have magnify glasses and other science tools.

We will also have a very special surprise guest on Monday.  It is someone who LOVES science and I hope it encourages kids to continue being curious and love learning!

This Thursday, June 7th from 5:00-7:00 will be our dedication to outdoor classroom, book fair, food trucks and time to chat with neighbors and friends .  There will be a short ceremony at 6:00 at the outdoor classroom.

We have lots of activities the last two weeks of kindergarten.  This year has just flown by and I am truly looking forward to these last few days with our amazing children!   It has been a joy to be their teacher and I look forward to staying in touch with our kids!

Hope to see you all of you soon,

Take care, Polly

May 4th things going on in kindergarten :)

Happy BEAUTIFUL Friday!

We have had a fabulous week reading Mo Willem books this week!!!!!     Here is his website where your child can play some fun games and watch him talk about his books.  http://www.mowillems.com/

Here are some of the things your child did this week:

  1. story with speech bubbles like he does in his Elephant and Piggie books
  2. wrote a story like he does in Knuffle Bunny books
  3. Should Pigeon be allowed to drive the bus????, Don’t let the Pigeon drive the……,
  4. made a venn diagram for real pigeons and Mo Willems pigeons
  5. did a play of Piggie and Gerald – Your child has this in his/her backpack and can act it out with you.
  6. did a thinking inference page on beginning, middle and end
  7. learned how to draw an elephant, pigeon and pig like Mo Willems and wrote a story about the pigeon next the picture I learned how to draw
  8. read lots and lots of fun Mo Willems books!  He is funny, creative and his books are full of words that we are learning to read.  Our kids took his books to read to our preschool friends this morning.  It was so sweet to listen to them read with expression and a huge smile to their friends.

We did  a lot of story math problems with addition and subtraction.  Everyone is improving!  We will keep doing more that make us think.  Next week we will be learning about fractions.

We are very excited to take some time to think about our sweet moms and figure out some ways to make their Mother’s Day a special one.  You are all loved!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Take care,

Polly

Happy Friday! 3/9

Hi everyone,

Our kids are really becoming amazing readers and writers!  I love their excitement!  Every child is improving on his/her level and it is priceless to see their constant smiles during reading and hear, “I can now read this book and I can’t believe I just wrote a story!”     Our hearts are full in our class and we just want more words to learn, more questions to be solved and more friends to make.

Today in math each child was given 10 Popsicle sticks.  Their task was to make a pen for a hen using the sticks.  It had to be enclosed, had to use all the sticks, there could be no opening, because the hen could get out and they were not allowed double up the sticks, have any of the stick hanging out or in the middle.  Sound easy???? We problem solved for fifteen minutes first and tried lots of ways to make it work.  We all persevered and never gave up when our first, second and many more tries didn’t work.  Next week we will try it with pretzel sticks and the kids will be allowed to break the pretzel in half if they choose to do so.  They will be asked to come up with a different way to make the pen and this might be tricky.  Luckily we believe in ourselves and know that there often lots of ways to solve a problem.

Money, Money, Money!  We will be learning to identify coins, amounts, adding them together (four dines, two nickels and three pennies) and play lots of money games.  The kids will be earning prizes of pick the go noodle, friend to come read in the class, lunch in the room and many more.  They will be earning pennies and will be cashing them in every few days or saving up.  Money can be hard, but we will get it with lots of practice.  Thank you for your support.

We will also be making St. Patrick Day traps and who knows if we will catch the leprechaun.   We will be doing lots of fun writing and reading with ch words.  The following week we will move to sh and then th.

Please ask your child if he/she played kickball with me on recess.  Wow! It was fun!  We are learning that you run to first base (instead of going to get the ball J), run when the next person kicks, if you are in outfield not putting the ball down and kicking too and so forth.  I will say everyone had a great time!!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and enjoy time with family and friends!  Thank you for all you do to support our class!

Take care,

Polly

Happy Friday! 3-2-18

Hi everyone,

Wow!  Recess almost blew us away!  I love the positive attitude our kids have when something is a little different.  We had fun throwing the Frisbee across the whole playground.

Thank you all so much for helping your kids come dressed up in a different way each day this week!!  We have had a great time reading and doing lots of Dr. Seuss activities!!!  I told the kids, “Next week you can wear whatever you want” and they shouted pajama day, crazy sock day…..  So if your child asks to wear pajamas that is why.  However it is not pajama day.   Just some good kindergarten fun with learning.

I am hoping your child has told you that we have had a yoga instructor come to our class every Tuesday to do a short yoga lesson.  Our kids are learning some of the official terms and ways to to relax when feeling anxious.  Please ask your child to show you and tell you some of the names of our poses.  I am proud of them for trying something new.

We had a great time being architects today!  Our kids were paired up and had a lesson on bridges and the importance of building a strong one.  They were given two big blocks, long piece of paper, ten rectangular small blocks and tow flat square blocks. They had to build a bridge that could hold a big, medium and small block. We talked first about how most of them or all of them may need to try MANY different ways and how it is important to do team work.  Some of the bridges fell fifteen times and all I heard was problem solving, laughing and planning for the new way.  Not one group complained or gave up!  They did an awesome job!!  Look under the pictures Dr. Seuss week to see how they problem solved and built.  There are Saturday classes you and your child can do together if your child enjoys math and science activities.  It is under www.myMSiC.org

We will be finishing up measurement next week and then move on to money in math.  We will be doing some fun things related to spring and soon be getting ready for St. Patrick’s Day.

Happy Friday 2/2

Hi everyone,

So it is official!  Six more weeks of winter!  We shall see!  We had fun learning about shadows with our Young scientist and went outside to trace each other’s shadow with sidewalk chalk.   We talked about what side of the school we would need to go, since the playground was shady.  I love the excitement about science in this class!  I have a fun science experiment for next week!  Check out the pictures under Feb. 2.

We worked on the short and long sound of the letter u and wrote and played games to challenge ourselves in learning.  Next week we will do activities with the short and long letter e and talk about how the letter e changes a word when it is on the end of the word.  We will also be continuing doing lots of sight words games to help with reading and writing.  Things are really clicking and the kids are getting excited.  Thanks so much for your support from home.

In math, we will be getting ready for the 100th day of school which will be coming up in a couple of weeks. (unless we have snow days)  The last few years we have dressed up as 100 year old men and women, however this year we will be having a fashion show.  We are asking that each child make a shirt with 100 things on it.  You can use an old shirt and make the 100 things a simple idea.  The kids will describe their shirts and walk down the runway.  I will send a more detailed paper closer to the day.  I think it will be a fun day celebrating 100 days of kindergarten!  Every child has lots to celebrate!

Next week Kaechele will be celebrating reading!  There will be an assembly on Thursday where each class will be presenting their three favorite book as a class.  We voted today and came up with Fancy Nancy, Man Gave Names to All The Animals and Magic Tree House books. Your child is welcome to come to school dressed up as one of those characters.  I will say, two boys came up to me today and asked if they could come to school dressed fancy.  I told them it would be great!  I am saying this because in the book, it is a girl that dresses up.  So if your child wants to get dressed up, he/she can dress up fancy, dress like any animal or Jack and Annie which are kids trying to solve mysteries.    Our door will be decorated with these books as well.  It is optional to dress up.

I hope every got the Valentine list of names of kids in the class.  We will put on some music and pass out the cards on Valentine’s Day.  We will make a bag in school to put the cards in so there is nothing for your child to do at home.  (yea!!!! )

Next week we will be learning about Abraham Lincoln.  This is always a fun unit and the kids find him very interesting.  You may be hearing lots of facts about him.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and get to enjoy time together,

Take care, Polly

1/26

Happy Friday!

Wow! We are now back in full swing.    We had a great week!  A friendly reminder that there is no school on Monday for kids.

Some of your kids have their polar bear/penguin folder with some of the research your child did in it.  I hope everyone has had a chance to watch our polar bear & penguin movie I sent of the kids.  Today we watched a short clip of real polar bears and penguins and the kids were amazed to watch them in action.

On Monday, every child will have a very special book coming home called the snowy week.  This book actually took us three weeks to do because of all the snow days.  Sorry about all the glitter, it just seems to make our books feel more special.  Every child is getting the chance to read his/her favorite page to someone in the school.  (Custodian, secretary…)  I am sure you will enjoy hearing about all the fun things your child would like to do in the snow.  I am very proud of the kids!  They are starting to really take chances with writing and use descriptive words and take chances with longer words.  (Humongous was a very popular word used in this book)

Next week we will be doing activities with the letter u and talking more about vowels.  In math we will be getting ready for the 100th day.  We are working on identifying all numbers 1-100 out of order and what is one less and one more.  The monster game will help the kids with these concepts.  You can spread out the 100 number line and call out a number and have your child point to it or say a number and have your child write it.  We will do lots more activities to continue with this concept.  We will be doing some science activities with shadows and one with observing a thermometer going from a cup of ice to a cup of hot water and how the numbers change and in what direction.

I hope you all have a wonderful long weekend,

Polly

1/19

Happy Friday!  (It doesn’t feel like Friday!!)  A student asked me this morning, when are we going to write about what we did over the weekend.  I totally get why she thought it was Monday.

Tonight is International night at Kaechele from 4:30-6:00.  You are welcome to come anytime during this time and walk around the gym to learn about many countries.  There will be dancing, pictures, information and food to taste from the countries.   I look forward to seeing whoever is able to make it tonight.

Please ask your child is it warmer on top of the snow or under it and why.  A couple of our friends in class did the experiment at home over the snow days and our class went outside and did it as well together.

Next week we will finish up testing in pals and get back in the swing of things. We will be finishing up polar bears and penguins and several other activities.    This is an exciting time in kindergarten because reading and writing and how numbers work start to click.  We are working hard at slowing down, taking the time to listen and think.  The kids feel so proud when they do their best.  I believe in every child in this class.

Happy Friday 1/12

Hi everyone,

We had a great day today!  I am sure your child told you about yes day!  We read a book called, Yes Day where the answer to every question is yes.  Every child wrote out one thing he/she would like to happen on yes day.  We talked about “reasonable” requests, because as much as I wish I could build a swimming pool in our classroom, I just can’t.  Our class book will come home with every child.  I hope you enjoy reading what they wrote.  Please ask your child what we got to do today.

I had two favorite times of today that I want to share with you.  The first is watching the kid’s expressions during our polar bear blubber science experiment.  Each child has a paper with his/her hypothesis on does blubber help keep you warm.  We had two bowls of ice.  Each child put one hand in the ice and the other hand had a big bag of blubber that was wrapped around that hand.  The kids talked about which hand was cold and which one was warm and how that would help a polar bear that has a lot of blubber.  We love science in kindergarten!  It is very cool to watch kids make a hypothesis and then when they are right, they are so excited.  It is equally cool to listen to them when their hypothesis was not right and have them explain to their lab partner what they learned.  We have learned so much about polar bears and penguins and will continue learning more next week.  Two kids were reading a book on polar bears today, are I heard them say several times, I can’t believe they can do that, that is awesome!!

My second favorite part of our day was our discussion about Martin Luther King Jr.  They were very interested and as children are, so confused with what was going on during that time.  They asked many questions and were silent while I was reading.  I could see them trying to understand what was going on.  I asked them to tell you three facts about him and ask you for three more facts about him.   We will continue learning about him next week.  I hope you all enjoy another long weekend!

I will be finalizing the book order tomorrow.  Please order by tomorrow if you wish to order any books.  Thank you!

Happy winter break!

Happy Happy Friday and winter break!!!

Wow!  What a week!!!!!  We had a lot of fun and are very excited to be with family and friends over break!  I can’t wait to hear about all the fun things everyone will do.  Ameesha will be enjoying Christmas in Disney World.  Life is good!

I hope you all love your gift from your child and will enjoy it for many years.  They love you!  I have added lots of pictures this week under the week 15.  Lots of smiles!  I am sure you have the lovely gingerbread home displayed in a special place in your home.  (or they are outside for the animals)  We read a story about how important it is to help animals in the winter find food.  I let them know if their houses fell apart, they could help animals.

We got on A-z and the kids know that they can use this anytime at home as well.  When you get on seasaw to check your child’s work, feel free to write a note to your child.  I think the kids will be excited to see a note from you by their activity.  Thanks!!

Thank you all for the generous Christmas gifts.  It was very thoughtful of you to think of me.  There should be a thank you note in your child’s bag.

I hope you all have a wonderful two weeks and get time to relax and enjoy time with family!

I wish everyone lots of happy times in 2018!!

Take care,

Polly

Happy Friday – Dec. 8

Happy Snowy Friday!

Wow!!!  Recess was a hit today!  The kids were soooo excited about the snowflakes!!!  I hope everyone enjoys playing in the snow this weekend.  (if any sticks)

We started making holiday gifts for you and the kids can’t wait to give them to you!!!  They love you!  It has been great hearing the kids explain about their holidays.  We realize that there are many similarities in different religions/holidays like family, lights, good food and celebration of good things going on in our lives.  Thank you for supporting your child in doing his/her project.

Sight words did not come home this week.  They will come home early next week and then more will come now and then when appropriate for your child.  We all learn at different times and that is okay.

I hope you all enjoyed listening to your child read his/her beginning, middle end activity of No Roses for Harry.  I am proud of the hard work the kids put into the writing.  I told them it is really important to read their work to you so they can explain what they did in school.

Next week will be full of lots of fun things and I know the kids will have a great week.

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Take care,

Polly
