Hi everyone,

Happy Friday!   You are all very much loved and the kids are grateful for you!  There are directions on the back of the turkey necklace.  This LOVELY necklace will be passed around Thanksgiving Day to Aunt Thelma, Grandpa Frank and so forth.  I hope it brings lots of smiles to your family meal and day.

We will continue doing activities with the letter l and c next week.  We will also continue “gathering data” and graphing it and reading the results to one another. As always, we are working on numbers 1-100 (identify out of order, write correctly, which one is < & >, + 1)

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving next week with your family!

Happy Friday! Nov. 10th

Hi everyone!  Happy Friday! It is hard to believe that it is almost Thanksgiving!  We started talking about why we celebrate Thanksgiving and what took place over 400 years ago.  Ask your child to tell you about the pilgrims and what happened on the Mayflower.  Our kids had so many great questions and are eager to learn more.  We will be doing lots of Thanksgiving activities the next week and half.

Today was a very special day at Kaechele.  We had our Veterans assembly and I believe the children have a much better understanding of fortunate we are to have people that choose to make huge sacrifices to keep us safe.  Thank you to Grace’s uncle for coming to the assembly.  We know that there are many other veterans in the families in our class that were not able to make it today.  Our class would like to thank all of them for their service.  We talked about what it means to live in our country and how important it is to thank our soldiers and veterans. Many kids wrote thank you notes to their uncles, and grandparents today in choice time.   Thank you to everyone that sent in items for the soldiers.  Our class wrote thank you notes to go with the items.

We have been talking about teamwork and how when we are kind to one another and listen to each other, so many great things can happen.  I showed them the clip of The Ohio State marching band working together to form  a figure that is supposed to be Michael Jackson moon walking.  It is really cool!!  Here is the site in case you want to take a look.  A few of the kids asked me to share it with you.

I hope you all enjoy the red yes/no book your child wrote.  They worked hard on coming up with four things to try to trick you.  Please enjoy listening to your child read his/her book to you, and then after you answer, your child will show you his/her answer.  They had fun reading their favorite page to people around the school today. The kids are becoming authors!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend,

Take care, Polly

Happy Friday Nov. 3rd

Happy Friday everyone,

What a beautiful day!   We had a great week!  Maybe Trick or Treating (chocolate) makes us all think a little more.  Or maybe having real bats in the room to observe.  We are taking off with reading and becoming confident is key.  I am proud of the kids for coming in each day and ready to learn.

We enjoyed having our first Young Scientist come to our class to teach us about The Five Senses.  We had fun going on a nature five senses walk and dug up mud to experience what it smell like, felt different kinds of flowers and plants to describe what it felt like on our hand, elbow  and cheek.  We learned how you feel things on all parts of your body.  We made guesses of what mud, sticks and other things we found outside tastes like.  The kids used lots of great juicy describing words!

Next week we will be doing activities with the letter I and doing word families with ip, it, Ing  words.  In math we will be doing more difficult pattern activities.

I look forward chatting with you on Monday or Tuesday about your child at parent teacher conferences.  I have lots of good things to share about your child.

I shared with our kids that my brother, Rex is a Marine and showed them his picture today.  Lots of kids said they had grandparents that were in the service.  If that is the case, please feel free to fill out the little form, and send it into school so we can put in in our school hall.  The pictures and papers will be returned.  Our school is also collecting items for the homeless Veterans all next week. (protein bars and toothpaste…)  Kaechele will be having a Veterans assembly, Friday November 10th at 8:30.  We welcome all Veterans.  Our school will be dressed in red, white and blue.

Please select your books if you are choosing to order from the book order by Tuesday.  Thank you!!

Happy Friday Oct. 27th

Hi everyone,

Thank you to everyone that has signed up for a conference.  I am looking forward to sharing with you all some of the great things your child has done this year.  We have only been in kindergarten for a short time, but it is amazing what the kids are already doing!  I am so proud of all of them!

Next week we will be doing activities with the letter D and activities on the five senses.  We will be working on using lots of good describing words to describe our senses.  I look forward to a great week!  Of course having trick or treating on Tuesday night will just add a little fun to the week.

Your child has a purple paper in his/her back pack.  We worked on counting by fives and tens this week and identifying the numbers as well.  We also had a contest on who could write the next number after 100.  So the kids learned how to write 110 and 105.  Today in book buddies the kids played school and pointed to a number and then said what it was and then said what the next number would be.  Some children were told a number and practiced writing the number the correct way.  Feel free to use the purple paper to practice numbers at home.  If your child comes up with a game, he/she can teach it to the class.

Tuesday is wear black and orange day!!  I have some fun activities planned for the kids!

Happy Friday Oct. 20th

Happy Friday everyone!

Our kids looked just darling today for picture day!  If you wanted to order pictures, but forgot to order, there will be retakes later in the year.  We had fun hearing about all the jobs the kids will be doing one day.  It is good to know that we will be kept safe, diamonds will be found, our pets will be taken care of, our mail will be delivered and we will be able to go to football games, concerts and dance shows to be entertained.  Our five and six year old experts sang songs to us, did dance moves, showed kicks and punches and talked about houses that would be built.  J

We had fun with our book buddies today seeing who could make the highest tower using a piece of paper and a foot of tape.  The kids had to problem solve, try different ideas, work together and continue to work until time was up to make it just a little higher without it falling down.  There is a paper in your child’s bag if you want to have a family contest at home.  Many of the kids were excited to do this with you this weekend.

We are really becoming rhymers in room 138!  We had fun playing the rhyming game this week and know it will help us to become great readers.  I hope sometime in the next few days you are able to find time to sit back and enjoy your child reading his/her dot book to you.  They all worked hard on it and are very proud.  This week I gave each of the kids an assessment called PALS.  This showed me your child strengths and where we will continue to work on in school with reading.  I will share these scores in a few weeks during parent teacher conferences.  There will be a sign up for conferences soon.

Next week we will be doing activities with the letters t & n and will be doing skip counting by fives and tens as well as continue to identify numbers and what is one more and one less.  Our goal is to say what comes after 12 and you child says 13 without counting up to 12 and then going to 13.

October 13

Happy Friday everyone!

Wow! It has been a fun and busy week in kindergarten!!  Most of us had fun getting muddy at the pumpkin farm.  Today we did a pumpkin science experiment today.  We made a hypothesis with many different objects (balls, rocks, full and empty play dough containers…) about if it would sink or float. We explained our guess and had many different ideas.  Lastly I put in a heavy pumpkin.  Many were excited and surprised to see it float.  Please ask your child to explain to you why the pumpkin floated and why the full water bottle sunk and then why did the empty one float.

We had a great time learning in our pajamas on Thursday.   Our class turned into camp kindergarten and somehow it is just more fun to read in a tent with a flashlight.   I hope you all enjoyed listening to your child read his/her I like to eat book to you.  There are a lot of skills that go into writing a sentence and we are on our ways to becoming authors. We went on a scavenger hunt and we now all know our right and left as well as many other directional words.  Our treasure was books!

Next week we will be talking about all the possibilities our kids have when they grow up for a job.  We had fun talking about what excites them and they all have a project to do for next week’s homework.  Please know it is okay if your child wants to be a unicorn trainer so she can fly over rainbows.  It sounded like a great idea today!   Thank you for allowing your child to design his/her own person so it is kindergarten made.  Allowing your child to cut out paper for the uniform and making his/her own eyes gives your child ownership of his/her project.  Each child will share with the class how he/she decorated her person and explain why he/she wants to do that job someday.  Thank you for your support.  The kids will be the expert in this job and the kids will ask him/her questions.  It is always interesting!!  I will also be doing some low key testing with your child on letters, letters sounds and beginning reading.  I will share the results with you at parent teacher conferences.  This assessment just helps me get a better idea of what your child knows and how I can help your child to continue learning.

I hope to see you all tonight at the fall festival!  All the kindergarten teachers will be working at the cake walk at 4:40-5:00.  The book fair will also be open as well as food trucks and games.  It will be a great night for some fun with family and friends!!!

Take care and I hope to see you soon,

Polly

October 6

Happy Happy Friday!

We have had another wonderful week in kindergarten land!  We enjoyed being scientist and looked to see what changes are starting to take place now that fall is here.  We used our descriptive words to describe what we observed and made a hypothesis of what we will observe next month.  I wish I had a video for you to listen to their conversations.  Pictures below under week five will show our walk.

We have a new learning game that was a hit this week!  I paired the kids up and each pair had a tin of cups with color and number words written on them.  The first child would read the word and his/her partner would give a thumbs up or the two would work together to figure it out.  Next they would try to make a tower with the cups.  At the end of two minutes, I say, “hands up” and we walk around and decide/measure what group has the highest tower.  There are a lot of things that take place in this game, such as reading, paying attention to what your partner says so you can agree or work together for the correct answer, team work in building together (listening to other people’s ideas and trying a different way when something doesn’t work like you thought it would) and estimating who had the highest tower.  We will continue playing this all year with different words and math problems.

We had a fun apple party today!  A special thank you to Angie for planning it and also to all the parents that sent in supplies and came to help.

As you all know we have been learning to read and spell words in the at and an word family.   I think you will be amazed that your child can read and write lots of words in these word families.  We wrote them on white boards and were so proud!!!

A friendly reminder that Monday is a half day for the kids.  We also have our filed trip to the pumpkin patch on Wednesday.  Please send your child in good clothes to walk around the farm and pack a lunch in a paper bag with your child’s name on it.  Parents that are chaperoning, please come on down to the classroom at 9:00.  The bus is leaving at 9:15.  Thank you!!  J

Next week we will be doing activities with the letters p & g.  Thursday will be pajama day!!!!    Pajama day is optional.  If your child chooses not to wear pajamas, that is fine.  No worries!

We will also be working on identifying numbers, writing numbers and directional words (right, left, under, above…) It will be a great week! The book fair will be going on next week each evening.  Friday night, Kaechele will be having the fall festival.  Hope to see you there!

I hope you all have a wonderful week.  I told the kids I am going to Carter Mountain Saturday morning and most of the class said they are going too on Saturday.  If that is the case, I will see you there.

Happy Friday! 9/29

Hi everyone,

Your child has a field trip permission slip in his/her bag today.  It would be great if you signed it and returned it with the eight dollars on Monday.  Thanks!  If you would like to chaperone, please sign that section and return it on Monday.  I will have a child pick the four names out of a hat on Tuesday if we have more than five adults that would like to go.  I will take lots of pictures so everyone will be able to experience the day one way or another.  Thank you!

We had a busy week and are starting to understand how kindergarten works.  I am proud of the kids for beginning to look for ways to be kind to one another and stopping and thinking of how they can help a friend.  This concept is not always easy for everyone, but it has been amazing to watch the children’s confidence grow as they do the right thing without being asked.  I love it!

We made lots of words, read books and did several writing activities with the letters b & r. We talk about all the letters each day and review their sounds and words that have those letters in them, but did an extra focus on b&r.  Next week we will do the letter a.  Here are the sight words we have been focusing on this year so far, is, am, here, I see, me, my, up, at, like, go, can, do, me & the.   Thank you for helping your child with these letters and sounds.

We have been working on making, labeling and extending patterns.  We have read books, danced, used objects (including ourselves) and explained to one another how our pattern works.  If you see that your child is having a difficult time, please know I will continue to work with him/her and you can do so as well at home by having your child make different kinds of patterns. (You can use blocks, food or anything to make the patterns)  thanks!  Next week we will be working on identifying and writing numbers.

Next week we will be learning about apples and how apples grow throughout the different seasons.  We will be having our fall party on Friday at 9:30.  Please look on nlist to see how you can help the class.  If you have not signed up, you can look at the directions I have sent previous weeks or the paper I sent home.  If people have signed up for all the items and you would like to contribute to the class, please contact me.  I have a few things we need in our class.  Thanks!

I hope to see everyone that can make it on Friday for our fall party.

Take care and I hope you have a nice weekend,

Polly

Happy Friday! Sept. 22

Happy Rainbow day everyone!

We are one colorful class!  I just love how our kids like to have fun while learning!  Everyone will be taking home their color folder full of color activities on Monday.  We have one more important thing to do on Monday before they come home.  I know you will be so impressed with your child and how he/she is reading color words and other sight words that we have been working on in class.  Please use your Monday reading time enjoy listening to your child read his/her color books.  I am so proud of every child!!!  We are on our way to becoming readers and writers!!!  Next week they can all wear anything!

This week we worked on letters, letter sounds and writing the correct letter formation of the letters m & s.  Next week we will be doing b & r.  The letter b can be tricky for kids, because is common at the beginning of the year to put a d for b.  I am learning with the kids how to make the letters the new way.  Thank you for helping your child.

In math the children did an amazing job sorting and classifying objects in small groups.  I was impressed with listening to one group discuss how to sort play food by shape, times you eat it and so forth.  We are working on listening to one another’s ideas and coming up with creative ideas.  Next week we will be lots of patterning.  We will start simple and then move on from there.  The kids will also be labeling their patterns.

I am attaching all the answers to our research.  Who knew unicorns like to eat rainbow donuts.  (If you find it online, it must be true)  We had fun going over the answers and had a great discussion.  I like their curiosity! Lif e is good!

things going on in kindergarten. 9/15

Happy Friday everyone!!

It was wonderful to talk with all of you last night at open house.  I hope you have a better idea of what is going on in kindergarten. We are always busy learning and developing friendships with one another.   Please know that I am always happy to chat if you have any questions. I am looking forward to working with you.  Our mystery reader sign up will be up on nlist soon.  Please remember to have two or three books and keep it a secret that you are coming.  It is also important that you fill out the volunteer paper before you come in to read or volunteer in anyway.

We had an amazing day today meeting new friends!!    This morning we went to the preschool rooms and read/talked about pictures with the kids.  It was fun being the helper! Our kids a great job and showed such kindness to everyone.  It will be great to develop friendships with these children.  We also had book buddies with second grade.  We will do lots of cool activities with this class this year.

Thank you for having your child wear our certain colors each day.  They look great and we are having fun learning to spell and sing the colors.  We are also writing lots of words to make our color books. My hope is it will all come home on Friday.  Several kids say they have been singing the songs from the site at home with their families.  Two kids asked today if I would send it home again so here you go.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CNGo7OAM0o   I look forward to seeing the kids in purple/pink on Monday!

Next week we will be doing some writing activities with the letter M & S.  In math we will be working on using lots of vocabulary to sort and classify.  The kids will come up with different ways to sort and will be explaining their ways to the class.  Your child has a Clifford game today with lots of ways to continue learning in math throughout the year.

Just a friendly reminder that This Thursday, September 21st is a half day.  The kids will be dismissed at 11:00.
