Welcome to Kindergarten!

Dear Families,

I am so excited to welcome you all to Kindergarten at Trevvett.

I wanted to tell you a little bit about myself. Kindergarten holds a very special place in my heart. I have taught my favorite grade for 17 years!  I have 3 grown children of my own and I remember how special their first year of school was!

Our class blog is one way that I will use to keep in touch with you!

I cannot wait to meet you and your child. We are going to have an awesome school year!

See you soon!

Mrs. Haskins

March 20, 2020

Dear Families,

The world’s a little confusing for all of us right now—grown ups and little ones alike—but one thing’s for sure, when you’re safe at home with family, everything feels a whole lot better. Henrico County Public Schools has extended the closure and now school is CLOSED until Tuesday, April 14th.

As you have probably noticed this week in working with your child, the HCPS Distance Learning Packet that you received has enough engaging activities to last the entire closure period. For more information, please visit the HCPS Distance Learning site: https://sites.google.com/henrico.k12.va.us/hcpsdistancelearning/kg-1

We also ask that you please continue some of the routines you had in place before the closure.

Please realize your child does not have to do online work during this closure. It is NOT required. It’s just a suggestion for those who would like to do more or can access online resources. If you do not have access, focus on the Distance Learning Packet activities (which do not require internet or electronics).

A message from Mrs. Bushey, our school counselor: In these uncertain times, it is so important that we take care of ourselves – both physically and mentally. Lots of thoughts and feelings will arise during this time. This link includes resources about how to talk to students about the Coronavirus, how to deal with fear and anxiety, mindfulness strategies, and coping skills, please visit http://blogs.henrico.k12.va.us/blbushey

We miss our little ones. Please let them know they are welcome to email us a message or picture anytime. We will be checking our email daily, please reach out if you have any questions/concerns. I sincerely hope each and every one of you and your loved ones stay healthy over the next few weeks.

The Kindergarten Team

March 13

Dear Families,

Starting Monday, March 16, Henrico County Public Schools will be closed for students for two full weeks of school (through Friday, March 27). Henrico County Public Schools will continue to assess the situation and decide later if we need to extend this period of closure. You will be notified as soon as possible of all changes.

Coming home in folders today we are including a Distance Learning Packet. Please complete this packet with your child over the next two-weeks. Any students that complete the assignments and return the packet when school reopens will earn TWO trips to the treasure chest!

Students also checked out additional library books today to use with their packet activities and have extra reading materials. Also, students will bring home some supplies and a few blank sheets of white copy paper.  Please return the scissors when we return to school.  MobyMax and RAZ Kids continue to be available online resources that can help create a familiar classroom routine of learning while at home.

Every Kindergarten teacher reviewed the packet and expectations of its completion with students today. The packet contains four (4) assignments:

  • What’s the Weather? : Students will have FUN observing, investigating, and tracking the weather. Students will observe and identify daily weather conditions (sunny, rainy, cloudy, snowy, windy, warm, hot, cool, and cold); predict daily weather based on basic observable conditions (watch/check the weather forecast if possible); and, chart daily weather conditions.
  • Choice Board: These engaging family activities will help students continue actively learning in Reading/Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies while giving them an opportunity to choose their own learning experience.
  • Reading, Language Arts, and Writing: Again, students are able to choose activities that help them stay in a routine of reviewing solid and rigorous literacy skills. The charts and worksheets needed to complete some of the activities are included in the packet.
  • Math: Along with a 120 Chart, Ten Frames, and Digit Cards (the digit cards will need to be cut apart for some of the activities), students can cover many areas of number sense development by selecting activities that will help them practice and strengthen skills we have been working on in class.

We hope your family will use these two weeks to really dive into learning with your child. Enjoy this time together and make it fun! Take care of yourselves during this unpredictable time. We wish you exceptional health, positive learning experiences, and great family memories.

This week we have had fun reading books about Groundhogs. We are excited to find out if the Groundhog sees his shadow on Sunday! In science, we are learning about shadows, what makes a shadow and experimenting with flashlights. We are hoping for some sun next week so we can do some science experiments outside with shadows.

In math we are comparing objects by length (longer, shorter) and height (taller, shorter). We will continue this study next week! We are also learning the months of the year and practicing saying our birthdays. Ask your child when his/her birthday is.

We picked bats to research last week since they hibernate. Here is our bat video!
