Friday 3/20

Hello, everyone!

I hope we have all had a safe and healthy first week of  distance learning!

I am adding some resources on here for you to take a look at if needed.

Here are some Resources from Mrs. Bushey, our guidance counselor, about how to keep calm during distance learning.

As always, please reach out if you need anything at all!

Friday 3/13

Happy Friday, Tigers! We are gearing up for two weeks of being out of school, so please read below very carefully!

Here is the county Learning Plan document. This also has links to reading resources,  links to clever and digital library resources

The county has created learning packets to help keep students learning while we are out for these two weeks. These include some examples of what students would do if we were at school. This includes:

  • Performance Task (Supports the Henrico Learner Profile and targeted Standards of Learning)
  • Core Content Choice Board  of Activities (Various levels or rigor, student chosen experiences)
  • Math Connections (Targeted numeracy experiences)
  • Reading Connections (Targeted reading and writing experiences)

As always, you may check my online resources tab to see any additional resources students may practice online.

I would now like to take some time to share the good things that have been happening this week!

In science this week we took an open notes test and had a 98% PASS RATE!!!! WAY TO GO!!

We also have been learning about potential and kinetic energy. We got to do an amazing experiment where we built roller coasters and tested them!

We’ve been reading Garvey’s Choice and discussing theme, cause and effect, and conflict/resolution. This book is fantastic and talks about self esteem and making the best choice for you! We have had many positive discussions while reading this book! It’s on epic if your student would like to continue reading it over the next two weeks!

In math we’ve been learning about quadrilaterals!

When we come back we will begin learning about area and perimeter.

  • There will be no school for students 3/16-3/27
  • We are still not sure of our field trip on April 1/2nd- Stay tuned!
  • Check this blog and check school messenger for updates. If you have not downloaded school messenger yet, check out the flyer that is coming home today!

Week of 3/6

Happy Friday Tiger Families! We have had such a bitter sweet week as we are getting ready to say goodbye to Mr. Sandahl! Today is his last day and he has been such an amazing addition to our class for the past 8 weeks! We are sad to see him leave, but we are hopeful that he will become a teacher at Trevvett next year!!

This week in reading we have been practicing some of the fiction skills that we learned at the beginning of the year! We have been focusing on theme by reading different stories! We will continue our practice next week, adding on the conflict and resolution onto our theme!

We have begun a new unit in math! We are learning about different geometric lines and shapes! This is a vocabulary heavy unit, I will be sending flash cards home for students to study for each math term. Make sure you’re practicing to ensure success for your student!

We wrapped up our Civil War unit with a test on Wednesday and we ROCKED IT! Mr. Sandahl taugh this whole unit and the kids loved and learned so much! They did such a great job on every activity he did with him and scored so well on the assessment! I am so proud! We will be taking a break from Virginia Studies as we catch up on science!

Happy Friday, Tigers! We had lots of great stuff going on this week!

We had a blast today ending our Fraction unit and celebrating our Benchmark PAW values! Next week, we will be celebrating Read Across America day by having a daily theme! I can’t wait to see your outfits!

In reading, we have finished up on Comparing and Contrasting texts. Next week, we will use fiction texts to reintroduce theme. We will be reading different mentor texts to discuss how the character(s) changed throughout the book and how that connects to the theme of the text. This is one of my favorite units to teach, so I’m really excited to dive in again! We will wrap up our research on the Gettysburg Address this coming week and continue with homophones!

In Social Studies we have taught all things Civil War! We will have our test next Thursday! We will also have our field trip on Wednesday-can’t wait! Log onto SOL Pass for some review

We wrapped up our fraction computation unit today! The kiddos worked so hard on their quiz and I am so proud of them! We also finished our fraction project. The kids had so much fun choosing their own recipe and scaling it so that there would be enough to feed the whole class. Then, we chose our favorite recipe…sugar cookies! They were delicious! Next week, we begin our unit in geometry. We will start with lines, line segments, rays, angles, and points. Then, we will dive into plane vs. solid figures. We will start a City Design Project as well! The students will work together to build a town that includes certain criteria like 2 sets of intersecting lines, 1 set of parallel lines, etc. Can’t wait to see how creative the kids get!

Week of 2/21 Update

Happy Friday, Tigers! We have wrapped up another awesome week!

Monday we had STEAM day and it did not disappoint! Students had to build model iron-clad ships that we learned about during the Civil War. Their boat had to hold 100 grams of weight!

Today we finished up our fire safety training. We entered a van that was a mock up of a house and then pointed out all of the fire hazards. We then practiced exiting a burning building by climbing down a ladder.

In math we have been learning about adding and subtracting fractions with uncommon denominators. On Friday we learned how to simplify fractions by finding the Greatest Common Factor. We will continue practicing this skill into next week where we will test on Friday.

Reading we have begun learning about comparing and contrasting. Students have compared and contrasted many texts this week, both fiction and nonfiction. We also read about former President Obama and compared him to ourselves!

Working on our Civil War unit! We started some in-class projects to take a look at specific battles/events of the Civil War. Students are researching the major battles that took place in Virginia and then then mapping out all the battle places on Google Earth. Students also created Wanted/Hero posters on Harriet Tubman, John Brown and Nat Turner. Our posters are hanging up outside of our classroom so feel free to stop by and check them out!

If you are feeling generous, we are in need of loose-leaf lined paper and pencils! Students who bring these in may choose an item from treasure box, a coupon, or a homework pass!

  • March 9 Spring Book Fair!

I felt the love today with all of the Valentines! Thank you to everyone who contributed to our special day!

This week we started working on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators-yikes! We started with finding Least Common Multiples and then Greatest Common Factors. We then brought in the fractions to connect why we need to know about LCM and GCF! We brought in some 3rd grade skills by adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators and then simplifying the fraction. Next week, we will continue with adding and subtracting fractions but include word problems as well.

In reading, we wrapped up our Cause and Effect Unit. We had such a great time using Epic! to find cause and effect examples in our chosen nonfiction texts. Next week, we will start our unit on Compare and Contrast. We’ll be using fiction and nonfiction texts/passages to do this.

In VA Studies, we learned about the reasons for the Civil War, introduced vocabulary, learned about the differences and similarities between Northern and Southern States, and important abolitionists! Ask your kiddo about them

Week 2/7

It’s been such a great week! I am so proud of my tigers and how well they’ve been handling the stress of benchmarks! Benchmarks are an assessment toll we use to gauge what we need to continue to work on as we get closer to SOLs. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out!

In reading this week we’ve been learning about Cause and Effect! We have been practicing finding events and determining how they were caused. When we talk about cause and effect the cause is the “why” something happened and the effect is “what” happened. We will be continuing learning this skill next week as well!

In math we were learning about equivalent fractions. We have just finished this and are using that knowledge to move into adding and subtracting fractions. We will be working on this skill for the next few weeks! Some really great ways to support your students at home is to have them cook with you or practice with measuring spoons!

In science we have been learning about the moon phases and important people in astronomy!

Next week in VA Studies we will be learning about the Civil War (VS 7). We will also be completing our Wax Museum speeches on famous African Americans.

4TH GRADE AFRICAN AMERICAN LIVING HISTORY MUSEUM! Students need a poster and some sort of prop/costume to represent their person. If no costume/prop is applicable, dress nicely and wear a name tag!

Week of 1/31

What an awesome week! We had so many great activities! Here are some snapshots of students watching a video that a parent made for them about a trip to Vietnam! Its so amazing to have different cultures and countries represented in our classroom!

In math we’ve been learning about fractions! We’ve been creating equivalent fractions and comparing them. Today we did an activity where students got to control sphero’s and drove them to equivalent fractions!

In writing we are finished with our state writing and have begun our fiction pieces! we did research this week during reading about some different monuments and learned how to research with a purpose (example: instead of just looking up “Statue of Liberty”, we came up with questions to research specifically). The monuments we researched are going to be part of our setting for our fiction story! (The student’s main character will have to visit the monument they researched!)

In science, we are learning about the Earth, Sun, and Moon and are focusing on the phases of the moon currently! We will be doing tons of activities over the next week so stay tuned!

Week of 1/24

It has been a great week! The students are really welcoming our student teacher into the class! We are so happy to have him and learn from him, as well as having him learn from us!

VIRGINIA STUDIES UPDATE: In VA studies we are reviewing EVERYTHING we have learned so far– which is no small feat! Next week look for some review homework to help keep things fresh and remind students of the tips and tricks we have learned for each topic (ie: MILK WITH KETCHUP TASTES NASTY to remember border states, PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR JACKET for rivers).  There is a great review for students on SOL PASS! Students can click on each standard and watch videos and play games to review. You can also check out VA Trekkers or the VA Studies resource tab on this blog (VS2-VS5). We have also been creating a review folder full of helpful information like links to review activities online, homework if we have it, and study guides for each unit. Look for that folder to grow more next week! Study each night! Our benchmark is Friday January 31!

Thank you for your participation with BIOGRAPHY BOTTLE BUDDIES! Yesterday we got to do a gallery tour of other classroom’s projects, and I know we were proud to show off our hard work!

This week in reading we prepared for our reading benchmark that we took today! Next week we’ll get started on Cause and Effect!

We have finished our State Writing! We have done a great job with the research and the papers are really coming together! I can’t wait for the students to showcase their work  in the hallway!

In math, we worked with fractions! We will be continuing with fractions over the next few weeks! Some really great ways to practice fractions with your student are to relate it to money! (Ask what the fractions for a quarter, a nickel, a dime could be).  We will also start reviewing for our math benchmark (February 6/7).

Week of 1/17

Hello, Tigers! It has been a GREAT week! These students are truly showing compassion and empathy for each other and our new addition to the class. And speaking of new addition, here is an introduction from our student teacher Mr. Sandahl!

Hello families! My name is Mr. Sandahl and I am a student teacher from VCU. I have had a wonderful time getting to know your students this week by taking over morning meetings and walking them to and from the classroom. I have a background in Theatre and Dance and look forward to incorporating this experience into the classroom. Today I taught the students one of my favorite Theatre games “Whoosh! Whoa!” I hope during my time here I will get the chance to meet with you and if you ever have any questions for me please feel free to reach out!

This week in reading we have been working on Sensory Words and Fact and Opinion. We have been prepping for the test we have today and also reviewing for our Reading Benchmark (testing on Wednesday and Friday 1/22 & 1/24)

We have been working on a Descriptive Writing piece for the past two weeks. Students chose a bordering state of Virginia to gather information on and begin writing about. We have done a great job with the research and really learned how to put a paper together! I can’t wait for the students to wrap this up and showcase in the hallway!

In math, we have been working on probability! Probability is determining the possible outcomes of an event (such as what are the chances of rolling a 3 on a 6 sided dice). We got to use some Code and Go mice to code our mice to go to some probability terms and fractions. Check out the pictures below!  We finish with probability today and we will begin Fractions next week!

We have started a new science unit on Solar System! We are currently looking at the order of the planets by size and distance from the sun. We will have a science technology day on Wednesday to wrap up science! Thursday we will start our next unit in Virginia Studies (VS6)

  • Benchmark dates as follows: Reading 1/22-1/24, Virginia Studies 1/30, Math 2/6-2/7
