2019 Winter After School Enrichment Classes
Classes will begin the week of February 11 and will run through the week of March 18.
If you have a PTA Membership, you will have first “choice” on ASE Classes!!
ASE registration for PTA Membership begins January 22nd – 24th.
Regular ASE registration begins Friday, January 25.
Registration deadline is Monday, February 4, 2019.

We will have our winter conferences on February 7th from 3:00-6:30. I will contact you if I need to have a conference. If you do not hear from me and would like one, please email me. I will respond with open slot times.
Who: all students at Colonial Trail Elementary
When: Thursday, February 21 from 6:30 – 7:30.
What: Starting in January, all students will begin a schoolwide writing prompt at school. They will write about a person, place, thing, feeling, or idea that is important to their family. This could be anything, such as pizza on Friday nights, your religion, a tradition, a grandparent, a significant family story, a piece of furniture, a family recipe, etc. The students will also draw or take a photograph of whatever family artifact they chose. Through their writing, the students will describe the artifact and explain its significance.
How: The students will be writing for an authentic audience – families and staff of CTES. They will go through the entire writing process of Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Refining, and Publishing.
Why: Every students’ writing and picture of their idea will be on display so all of our families can see the rich diverse school community that makes Colonial Trail a special place.
Where: Every students’ writing and picture will be displayed on walls and/or on tables throughout the school building. First grades’ work will be on display in the gym since they are performing this night. A sampling of food/desserts from around the world will be available in the cafeteria as well.

We are excited to welcome Catava Burton, HCPS Educational Specialist, to Muffins with Moms, January 18, from 8-8:30am. In her “Are You Smarter than Your Child’s Smart Phone?” workshop she will share the latest texting slang, secret apps, and social media tricks. Information will also be provided on bullying/cyberbullying, human trafficking, internet safety, and psychological impact of these issues. Strategies will be provided to help parents keep their children safe. Bring your smart phone!
Just a reminder that the Planet Newspaper Project is due NEXT Friday, January 11th! The students were given this assignment before winter break. I will not be accepting any late projects. Thank you for understanding.
Welcome back from winter break! We are going to use Thursday and Friday to review procedures, rules and expectations. See the “Weekly Updates” link to see what skills we will be working on.
Please make sure the students get lots of rest tonight! I expect tomorrow to be touch for some students, especially if you’ve been traveling most of break. I will continue to have snack during reading centers, so please make sure they bring a snack.

We are going to have our VS. 3 Jamestown test NEXT Tuesday, December 4th. It is posted under “Virginia Studies” in the weekly updates section, but I want to make sure everyone sees it 🙂
I will be sending a Scholastic Book order form home on Tuesday. Due to the upcoming break and the time it takes to get the order, I will be putting the order in on Friday. I hope this will allow it to come in time for break. If you send in an order before Friday, I will input as soon as I receive it.
I will still accept orders through the break. However, I will not be able to input the order until after we leave, so that it does not arrive to school while it is closed. Any orders after December 10th will arrive after break.

On Tuesday, November 20th we will be hosting our Turkey Trot. The Turkey Trot is a time for students to get outside, get some fresh air and exercise a bit! I will be setting up a course around the school that is a little less than a mile long for the students to walk/jog/run on for a half hour. The course will be marked with flags, cones and signs. During that time we invite parents to come walk/jog/run as well. This will be a great community builder for us at Colonial Trail and we look forward to it every year! (it has been called the Jingle Bell Run) Below you’ll find the schedule. If you would like to volunteer to come walk/jog/run the course with the students that would be incredibly helpful! We just ask that you be an extra pair of eyes and make sure students are being safe and staying on the course. You are encouraged to get your exercise in as well!
The K-2 students will be outside running from 10:00-10:30AM
The 3-5 students will be outside running from 10:45-11:15AM
If you are volunteering please use the link below to sign up. You will just come to the school a few minutes before your student’s run time. Sign in and wait in the front hallway. (please do not go up to the classroom) Then you can make your way out to the course. Kindergarten and 3rd grade students will start their run in the back of the school by the playground equipment. 1st and 4th grade students will start their run by the bus loop. 2nd and 5th grade students will start their run in the front of the school.

Younger siblings are not allowed to take part in the Turkey Trot due to Liability – only students enrolled at Colonial Trail can partake. Thanks for your understanding.

Just to give you all a heads up, we will be sending home Jamestown Field Trip permission/payment forms this week (November 5th). I have slots open for chaperones and will do a selection drawing. We tend to have a lot of interest for this field trip, so this is the best way to choose. I will contact you AS SOON AS I CAN, so that you can make accommodations. I would love to have chaperones choosen by Wednesday of this week (November 7th), and will email you.
Please do NOT send in your chaperone payment until you have been told you have been selected.
Also – PTA’s Cubs Night In will be on December 7th. More details will be coming, but mark your calendars!
