Friday is the end of the third nine weeks!  Wow!  It’s amazing how fast this year is going by!  Friday is also a half day for students.

Field Trip

For our spring field trip, we will be taking the class to the Virginia Historical Society! The students will be learning more about Virginia and Henrico history by going on a tour and scavenger hunt with their class. This field trip is free!  Students need to wear comfortable shoes and pack a lunch for this trip.

PE activity logs

Youth Art Month Spirit Week is this week!

Celebrate the importance of art education for all children and support school art programs by wearing different color families each day next week.

Monday – Primary Colors (Red, Yellow and Blue)

The group of colors from which all other colors can be made

Tuesday – Secondary Colors (Green, Purple and Orange)

Colors that result from the mixing of two primary colors

Wednesday – Complementary Colors (Purple/yellow, Blue/Orange, Red/Green) Complementary colors are two colors that are on opposite sides of the color wheel. Complementary colors can make each other appear brighter.

Thursday – Warm or Cool Colors

Warm colors — such as redyellow, and orange; evoke warmth because they remind us of things like the sun or fire.Cool colors — such as bluegreen, and purple; evoke a cool feeling because they remind us of things like wateror grass.

Friday – RAINBOW DAY – A way to remember the order of the rainbow, is to use the acronym ROY G. BV which stands for Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Violet

MATH

Monday, March 25th is the circles test.  Your student has lots of notes in their notebooks and a study guide.  They can also use the resources on this blog to help prepare for this test.  This week we will work with area, perimeter, and volume.  The students already know how to find the area and perimeter of quadrilaterals and triangles so the new focus is volume.  There will be a test on this information on Monday, April 15th.  We will also work with a quadrant coordinate plane this week.  The students will do fun pictures and a map activity using positive and negative coordinates.  Weekly Math (blue Sunshine Math) is due on Thursday, March 28th.

LANGUAGE ARTS

There is no Word Trek this week due to our poetry Socratic Seminar that Mrs. Nevetral is presenting.  The students have received the poems they will be discussing and the assignment they need to complete in order to be prepared.  Completion of this assignment by Wednesday morning is required to participate in the seminar.  This is going to be fun!  The students are doing a fantastic job on their Book Clubs.  They have been given a due date of the week we get back from Spring Break.  If your student is behind they may be completing some of it from home.  They can use their Google drive to work with their teammates.  We will be focused on text structures, analyzing poetry, comprehending nonfiction using stop and jot note taking strategies, figurative language, and summarizing this week.

SCIENCE

We will continue with sound this week.  The test for our Sound unit is Thursday, March 28th.  The students have notes and a study guide to help prepare for this test.  The students received paperwork for their Sound Project last week.  This project is due on Friday, April 12th.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  This week we will also begin our Light Unit (5.3).  The students will discover how light travels, the definitions of translucent, opaque, and transparent, as well as the difference between concave and convex.  This is a super interesting unit!

SOCIAL STUDIES

The students are working hard on their Midwest commercials.  I can’t wait to see the final projects.  Mr. C. is coming on Thursday, April 11th to help us with green screens, filming, and editing.  This is going to be amazing!  The test for the Midwest will be given on Tuesday, March 26th.  The students have lots of notes and a study guide to use while preparing for this test.  Our next region is the Southwest!

STOCK MARKET GAME

The kids are loving the Stock Market game and even making some money!  It is so cool to watch them interact with their groups discussing what stocks are best.  The excitement is amazing when they decide to buy or see that their stocks have gone up.  This week we learned about the fees taken out for things like commissions.  Learning to factor this element in will certainly help them do the best they can with their money.  Stay tuned to see how each team does in this state-wide competition!

MATH

We will continue working with circles this week.  The students are finding circumference and will begin finding area this week.  We will also start looking at transformations of shapes in geometry.  The test on circles will be given on Monday, March 25th.  Your students has notes in their math notebook and a study guide in their purple folders.  Weekly Math (bright green logic puzzle) is due on Thursday, March 14th.

LANGUAGE ARTS

The students are working hard on their Book Clubs.  In reading we will also work on poetry comprehension, author’s purpose, summarizing, and text features.  The students will make a poster of all the text feature using magazines to find examples of each.  In Language, the students will continue writing about the three things they would change about GAES.  We will finish up poetry booklets as well.  Mrs. Nevetral will come in and introduce a poetry Socractic Seminar that will take place next week.  This is such an awesome activity!

SCIENCE
We will explore more about the characteristics of sound this week.  The students will have several hands-on experiences with sound making devices.  Instead of a book report this month, the students will have a sound project.  Paperwork for this project will come home later this week.  There will be a quiz on sound waves and how sound moves on Wednesday, March 20th.  Your student has notes and a study guide to help prepare for this quiz.  We will also begin our unit on light this week.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Since we did not get to start the Midwest commercials last week, we will start them this week.  The students will work in groups of three to come of with a commercial for the region.  They will write the scripts that includes items like physical landforms, economic opportunities, and significant landmarks or places to visit this week.  Upon approval of their script, they will design the skit or setup for presentation.  These are going to be awesome!  The test for the Midwest Region will be given on Tuesday, March 26th.  Your student has lots of notes and will receive a study guide this week to help prepare for this test.

It is Dr. Suess week!  Please see the previous blog for our spirit days!

Thank you so much for the Clorox wipes that were sent in!  We will definitely put them to good use!  🙂

MATH

We will continue with triangles and angles this weeks.  The students will be doing lots of measuring with protractors.  We will be finding missing angles as well as the area of triangles.  We have also been exploring patterns this week.  Ask your student to show the awesome pattern we worked on in class.  It is so cool!  🙂  There will be a test on this information on Monday, March 11th.  Your student has lots of notes and a study guide in their math notebook.  Please encourage them to use the math page of this blog as well as complete homework in a focused manner in order to prepare for this test.  Weekly Math (yellow puzzle) is due Thursday, March 7th.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Ask your student about our book tasting on Friday.  It was amazing!  The students “tasted” six different books.  I am going to be putting them in groups based on their comments about each book.  Next, they will develop a novel study with their group as they read the book.  Each student will write a summary about each chapter independently.  They will work with their group to create vocabulary activities, comprehension questions, and culminating projects for their book.  We are calling the time that they are working together “Book Club”.  The students are going to be using so many skills while working on this project!  I can’t wait to see what they produce!  In small groups, the students will work with author’s purpose, poetry writing, quotation marks, editing and revising, and context clues.  They will also finish their context clue poster with their partner group this week.

SCIENCE

This week we will explore physical and chemical changes.  The students will also complete a set of stations that we started last week.  In these stations, they have been using clay to model chemical formulas, discovering and creating a new element for the periodic table, and completing fun activities with a partner to help prepare for the test on this unit.  The test will be given on Tuesday, March 12th.  The students will complete a Matter Breakout with a partner and we will do several review Kahoots also this week to help prepare.  Please encourage your student to begin preparing for this test now.  Completing homework accurately and staying engaged in class will certainly help.  We have had lots of discussion lately regarding taking ownership of our learning and making sure that the time in class is focused in order to get the most out of it.   Listening carefully and participating fully will help tremendously when taking quizzes and tests in all subjects.  Thanks so much for reiterating this at home for me.  🙂
