Updated Resources for Families

Updated Resources for Families

Dear Twin Hickory Families:

We know there is much uncertainty right now, but we believe it is important for all of us to take care of ourselves and our families. While we are away to ensure we are staying physically healthy, we also want to make sure we are taking care of our mental and emotional health. During this time, we understand many different feelings and thoughts can arise. We want to provide resources to help support you and your families while we are navigating this period away from Twin Hickory. Here are a few links to resources on how to talk to our students about the Coronavirus, how to deal with fear and anxiety, mindfulness strategies, and coping skills.

Middle School Transition

Middle School Transition

Welcome to 5th grade! What an exciting year this is going to be! Although the year has just begun, it is time to begin our conversations about middle school! Throughout the year I will be sharing information about the middle school transition including specialty program opportunities, open houses, course selections, athletic tryouts, and summer camps.

Below is a timeline (with some dates and details still TBD):

September 18th: Applications will come home with ALL 5th graders for Moody International Bachelorette Program (IB). Please see the attached video for more information about the IB program: https://content.streamhoster.com/preview/hcpstv/2015-16/MS/IB/moody.mp4?autoPlay=1&width=768&height=432

September 19th: Applications will come home with all 5th graders who are identified gifted in Math AND LA for Wilder Gifted Young Scholars Academy (GYSA)

October 17th: Moody IB Public Information Session/Open House (Session 1 4:30- 5:30, Session 2 6:00- 7:00 at Moody MS)

October 21st OR October 23rd: GYSA Open House (5:30- 7:30 at Wilder MS)

November 15th: Deadline to submit applications for Moody IB and/or Wilder GYSA programs

January 2020 (dates TBD): All 5th graders will be taking a field trip to Short Pump Middle School (which is our feeder pattern middle school unless your child is on a variance). Short Pump will also be holding several events, including an Open House, for parents. Here at THES, we will hold a Captains Chat to discuss any lingering questions and to review the course selection process that will take place in early February.

January 29th: Letters will be mailed to students that applied to Moody IB and/or Wilder GYSA.

February 2020 (dates TBD): Parents will complete the course selection process for their students’ home school (even if they have applied to a specialty program).

We want to make this transition as seamless as possible so please feel free to contact your child’s teacher or myself at any time, Lindsay Helquist ldhelquist@henrico.k12.va.us or 360-4700.

Welcome to the 2019/2020 School Year!

Welcome to the 2019/2020 School Year!

As we begin a new school year, I am excited about the many programs and services offered through Twin Hickory’s Developmental Guidance and Counseling Program.  I will be working with students, parents, faculty, staff and community members in many ways through a variety of services.  Each service is aimed at helping all children learn and develop to their highest potential. Elementary guidance and counseling services are available to all students.

As a school counselor, I help children work through normal developmental issues.  I teach them skills that will help them throughout life. Twin Hickory’s counseling services include: individual counseling, small group counseling, and classroom guidance.

Please remember that I am here to help your child have the best school year possible and to help you and your child’s teacher make that happen.  I look forward to getting to know each of you and your children throughout the year. Should you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call anytime at 360-4700.
