Day and Night

Day and Night

Have you ever wondered where the sun goes when it’s nighttime or why the days of winter seem shorter than the days of summer? We read and discussed the book, WHAT MAKES DAY AND NIGHT by Franklyn M. Branley and found some of the answers!  We learned that the sun gives us heat and light ! Day and night are caused by the rotation of the earth!  We created sun prints using construction paper and objects we found in our classroom. We took our paper outside in the sunlight and placed objects such as blocks, erasers and legos on top. We went back into our classroom and waited for the sun to perform it’s magic! When we returned, we discovered that the sun has the ability to change the color of the paper! Next, we wrote about our favorite daytime and nighttime activities! We had fun learning about the sun!

January Fun!

January Fun!

Winter is here even though the temperature has been warmer than usual!  We discussed how animals prepare for the change from fall to winter. We learned how some animals hibernate and  why monarch butterflies, some birds and whales migrate. Other animals use camouflage to protect themselves from predators. Even people have to adapt to the change of seasons!

Metro Richmond Zoo

Metro Richmond Zoo

We had a cool, windy, awesome day at the zoo!  A big thank you to all of the parents who helped chaperone.  We saw birds like ostrich, flamingo, and penguins!  A giant tortoise,  alligators  and  an albino python named Max were fun reptiles to watch.  We loved the antics of  the baby chimps, tigers and praire dogs, too!  Watching fruit bats eat while hanging upside down, a newborn gazelle run beside its mother and a male ape protect his family were highlights of our trip. Spending the day at the zoo observing  body coverings,  habitats and ways animals move was lots of fun!
