Thank you for supporting the Rivers Edge library!
Check it Out!
In honor of Dr. Seuss’ 108th birthday, the Cat in the Hat came to visit Rivers Edge!! The students put up their favorite title or picture about Dr. Seuss’ books in the cafeteria hall next to the BIG hat!!
In February, 4159 items were checked out! Rivers Edge continues to check out over 4000 items a month. A big thank you to the students and teachers for their support of the library and the LOVE of reading!
Kindergarten and 1st grade come every week for library fun. They explored Tumblebooks for Valentine’s Day by “watching and listening to” Porcupining A Prickly Love Story by Lisa Wheeler.
2nd grade is getting ready to start their Caldecott reading project. The Caldecott Award is given annually to a book in recognition of its excellent illustrations. The students will choose a Caldecott book, read it, and create a Photo Booth video describing/ reviewing the book. What fun to see and hear the many book trailers!!
Reference materials and biographies are on the mind of every 3rd grader. They all visited the library to have a reference review lesson. The students worked in groups to each complete a Google Doc Form that answered 3 questions about particular reference materials: Why do people use that reference material? What makes that reference material unique? Give 4 specific examples of what questions could be answered using that reference material. Kudos to the 3rd grade for doing such a great job using it for the first time!!! The biography section has been hopping while the 3rd graders check out and complete their biography projects.
All of the 4th grade classes are finishing up their scientific research and (new this year!) creating their own graphic organizer. The students did a great job figuring out how to collect and organize their research information about Thomas Edison, Michael Faraday and Benjamin Franklin.
If America Were a Village of 100 people, what would it look and act like? This and other demographic questions were researched and answered by Mr. Friedman and Mrs. Dussault’s classes. Their information was based on the book, If America Were a Village by David J. Smith. The projects, which included organized information and personal reactions, were fascinating to review together!
COMING SOON IN APRIL!!A Family Book Club in honor of School Library Month! More details to follow.

I am continuing to read Virginia Reader’s Choice books with Kindergarten and 1st grade. We have read We are in a Book!, How Rocket Learned to Read, and A isn’t for Fox. We also took a trip to Australia to learn more about the author, Mem Fox, who is the author of the month at the Twin Hickory Public Library.
The 2nd graders have been busy in here! They have studied different habitats, generated research questions about animals, searched OneSearch for the answers, and created a flipchart to celebrate their favorite Famous American. They also came in for a special Dictionary and Index skills lesson.
Matter, measuring and economics are just a few of the topics 3rd graders are studying in the library. Ask your 3rd grader what object they pulled out of the Matter Box and how they described its properties.
Mrs. Boyer’s class has been in for several weeks in a row working on different class projects- Civil War battle research, geography, and scientist research. I will be seeing the other 4th grade classes in the next few weeks for the scientist research project. Ask your student about creating their own graphic organizer!!
The 5th grade continues to come in, check out books, and participate in Generous Genres! Every month we talk about a different genre at lunch so encourage your child to get involved. Some of the students will begin to come in to do independent research based on their class novel and/or state.
