What a wonderful way to honor Dr. Seuss’s birthday! We had a blast this week  celebrating Read Across America Week by dressing up, sharing our favorite books, listening to guest readers, and much more! On Thursday, Mrs. Broudy and her family went on Facebook to share their favorite books and reading tips for children. Thanks to everyone for sharing their photos of reading! It’s not too late to post with the hashtag #trevvettproud.Mrs. Broudy looked like she had a fun time skating through the hallways today as the Cat in the Hat! I hope you all enjoyed reading this week. Keep reading 20 minutes every night!

A LOOK INTO ROOM 8:

Reading- Students continued analyzing text for figurative language. In addition to this, we added on another unit of discussing the elements and types of poetry. Figurative language is used frequently throughout poetry, and so during our unit we will also explore this as well. Students looked at the structure of poetry including lines and stanzas as well as the types including rhyme, patterned, and free verse.

Writing- We celebrated the 100th day of school by completing a writing assignment in which we imagined that we are 100 years old and looking back on our lives. The students described their 100 years using adjectives and gave specific examples of why they would describe their lives that day. They especially loved taking pictures through an app that allowed us to see what they would look like as 100-year-olds!Image result for 100th day of school

Social Studies- Our unit on the Northeast region of the United States wrapped up this week. We enjoyed a fun Kahoot! review game as we continued practicing our geography skills. On Thursday, we concluded the unit with a summative assessment. Next week we will dive into the Midwest!

Students that earn 100% mastery in MobyMax OR practice for 1 hour a week in MobyMax will get the chance to decorate a rock garden to beautify our school grounds! Click here to see the flyer sent home today.
  • VCU Market Day: On March 26th, fifth graders will travel to VCU for an extra special Market Day with students from across the Richmond area and even state!  This week we formed business teams and started brainstorming what students will make. Unlike our typical Market Days, most of the preparation will be done at school and students do NOT need to prep at home. I will reach out next week about supplies and permission forms soon.  We would LOVE chaperones–the more the merrier!  Contact me if interested.
  • (Repost) Tigers Lead T-shirts: Each fifth grader is invited to purchase a unique t-shirt created by his/her leadership team!  These will be worn on VCU Market Day in March and Moving On Celebration in June.  Click here for an extra copy.  Orders due 3/1.  Please contact me if you are in need of financial support.  On March 22, we will visit Hermitage to learn about how our shirts are printed!
  • (Repost) Career Day: Ms. Bushey is seeking presenters for Career Day on March 27th. Click here for the flyer and contact Ms. Bushey if you are interested.
