Last week we worked hard learning to tell time to the hour and half hour. The students had a blast designing their own watches for our “What time is it?” activity. We took a “road trip” to different areas of our country to compare the geography, climate, and recreational activities with Virginia. Weekly Update 2/14

What an exciting week in first grade! We learned all about equal shares, halves and fourths with our fractions unit in math this week. We continued learning about important African American figures for Black History Month by reading biographies of famous African Americans including Venus and Serena Williams, Barack Obama, and Tyree Guyton. We learned about the -ai/-ay pattern for phonics, and started our matter unit in science. We also visited the 4th grade African-American living history museum to learn all about famous African American Trailblazers!

On Friday the students had an amazing opportunity to video chat with Detroit artist Tyree Guyton about the Heidelberg Project. We learned about the hardships faced during Guyton’s youth, and how he overcame the sadness from the destruction of his hometown neighborhood. His story and artistic vision truly inspired all of us. On Monday we are going to create a mural together out of re-purposed materials that represents Trevvett’s Paw Values!

Of course we also celebrated Valentine’s Day! We read a fun book about a cranky boy, Crankenstein, who despises Valentine’s Day until someone special comes along. The student’s Crankenstein crafts were so cute! Students created special valentines, decorated their valentine bags, exchanged valentines with their classmates, and enjoyed treats for our class party. So much fun!
