Thank you to those of you who were able to attend parent teacher conferences this week. It was wonderful meeting with you all and I appreciate all that you do to support learning at home! For those who were not able to attend, please let me know if you would like to reschedule.

We spent some time this week in social studies learning about elections. We held a class election where we voted on a class pet stuffed animal. As you can see, the cat won! We also reviewed interpreting graphs with this activity. The students asked and answered questions such as “how many more people chose the cat than the frog?” Now they all are hoping that we can get can get a real class pet! Maybe we can look into a pet fish…

In language arts, we practiced retelling stories using the “Five Finger Retell” strategy with Karma Wilson’s “Bear” series. The students worked on retelling the stories by identifying the characters, setting, problem, events and ending. We read Bear Wants More, Bear Feels Sick, Bear Feels Scared, and Bear Snores On. They were able to retell  these stories with their classmates using their bear finger puppets. Be sure to sure to have them retell their favorite “Bear” story to you!

Weekly Update 10/26/18

Happy Friday!

I hope that everyone is warm and dry this evening!

We had a busy week in first grade working on our animal habitat research projects. Students worked collaboratively in learning groups to investigate what animals need to live and  how different animals meet these needs in their environment. After exploring and researching many species of animals, each learning group chose an animal that they wanted to learn more about. Students used research from Pebble Go, Epic, and library books to discover why their animal lives where they live and then created habitats for their animal. They did an amazing job! On Monday, the groups will share their habitats with the class. 🙂

In language arts we learned about the inflectional ending -ing. Check out our King of Ing crowns!

Here’s what we will be learning about next week!

Please be sure to visit my Sign Up Genius to sign up for your Parent- Teacher Conference. I will be having conferences on Tuesday, November 6th from 7:30-11:00 AM and Thursday, November 8th from 3:00-7:00 PM. I look forward to meeting with you!

Please help support Fifth Grade’s Halloween Treats for Troops service project!  They are collecting candy for soldiers through Soldiers’ Angels from Oct. 29 – Nov. 2nd.  A flyer featuring student artwork was sent home this week . Boxes will be placed in the school lobby for donations. Thank you! 🙂

The PTO is running a classroom – to – classroom contest for Box Tops this year! Please help support our school. Please label your Box Tops with Burnett so that our class earns points towards winning a Pizza Party sponsored by the PTO!

Please help out by:

  1. Checking the dates on their box tops (expired box tops can make our entire submission get tossed out)
  2. Putting box tops into groups of 50, in a ziploc baggie with the number “50” on the outside.
  3. Using the 50-count Submission sheet if they prefer that method (I’ve attached a PDF of that.)
  4. Bonus Box Tops Certificates cannot go into the baggie of 50 or be attached to a collection sheet.

They are turned in separately and can be sent up in a separate baggie.

Thanks for all you do and have a great weekend! 🙂
