Welcome to 4th Grade!

Welcome to 4th grade!

Welcome to 4th grade! I am so excited to introduce myself as your child’s 4th grade teacher! My name is Jenny Johnson and this is my fifth year at Longan, and my third year teaching 4th grade. While the beginning of this year will certainly be different than anything we are used to, I look forward to getting to know you and your children, and working together to have a wonderful and successful 4th grade year.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to me this week with any questions or concerns you may have! I am happy to help and look forward to speaking with you all later this week.

Watershed Lesson

We had a special guest teacher today who specializes in watersheds, specifically in Henrico County, part of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. We learned about watersheds earlier this year, so this was a great review and wonderful opportunity to see examples of exactly how a watershead works. This reminds us that everything we do to the environment (even right outside our houses!) eventually effects all of our water sources as well. The rivers, the Chesapeake Bay, and eventually our oceans!

Force and Motion

We have had some exciting, hands on lessons on force and motion! We experimented with friction, testing which surface a ball would roll faster and further on- carpet or the smooth classroom floor. We played “kinetic and potential energy” rather than red light green light- to practice learning the difference between kinetic or moving energy, and potential or stored energy. Lastly, as an extension activity during PIE time we got to make energy robots! The goal was to create a robot that used different types of energy such as mechanical, thermal, light and sound. Our class had some very creative ideas!

Fire Safety

This week we have had the pleasure of having fire safety lessons with a few Henrico County firefighters! We learned important safety precautions to remember at home, and even got to practice exactly what we would do in case of an emergency in the fire safety house. Great job everyone!

Winter Party and Queen of Cans!

Thank you so much to everyone that contributed cans to our classroom collection for the Christmas Mother. I am SO proud that we were able to collect the most cans as a class out of the whole school! Ms. Johnson got to wear the Queen of Cans crown all day long! Great job, 4th graders! Here are some additional photos from our awesome winter party as well! Thank you to everyone who brought in food items, volunteered, and came to join us! Enjoy your winter beak & happy holidays!

Lewis Ginter Field Trip!

Thank you to all of our chaperones for making our field trip today possible! Our class enjoyed an outdoor lesson learning all about the Powhatan Indians. We walked through a longhouse, touched agave fibers, wove reeds, planted corn, and so much more! The kids were read a traditional Powhatan story, explored the forest for natural resources, and touched so many items: deer antlers, turtle shells, squash, rabbit furs, and tree bark. After our class, we had a picnic lunch with the entire 2nd grade and explored the gardens. It was an awesome day!

International Night Fun!

We have been working hard with Longan’s ESL teacher, Mrs. Moss to prepare a class research project on China. We used computers and books to research and learn about their food, written language, geography, and most famous inventions and contributions! We had so much fun learning about China and sharing this wonderful project at International Night!

Click the link below to see a video of each student sharing fun facts about China!

Two of our friends (Kyler and Guilherme) also had the chance to appear on the morning announcement and encourage students to attend International Night in Portuguese! Check out all of our hard work and our finished products below!
