IB Students start STEM Z nonprofit

Sriya Darsi, Sahithi Sarva, and Vivek Bachhu started a non profit organization called STEM Z! For the past year they have been working very hard to give students a well rounded insight into STEM. STEM Z currently teaches over 450 students from across the globe and partnered with various organizations! Their main goal is to teach and spread their passion for STEM to others and they hope to make an impact in more students lives!

Few months ago they have partnered with Henrico 4H for a coding spin club which turned out to be a great success! They also were interviewed by Henrico 4H!

Prestigious Hornaday Badge Awarded to IB Junior

Josh Irizarry-Diaz’s personal project for the IBMYP was the Removal of English Ivy, an invasive species from Reedy Creek. He continued working on this project for 21 months and submitted his final report to the BSA Council Conservation Committee in June 2021. He has been awarded the William T. Hornaday Award-Badge. It is an award designed to recognize scouts who undertook and completed truly exceptional conservation projects. It involved 43 volunteers for a total of 358 hours of work.

Less than 4,000 Hornaday awards have been awarded since the program inception in 1917. To put it in perspective, 61,353 Eagle Rank Awards were earned in 2019 alone, with more than 2.5 million since 1912. Josh been one of them in 2019.

He will be recognized at the Heart of Virginia Council Annual Recognition Gala on the 26th. I believe he is the first scout in years in our council.

His family and Henrico HS IB are ecstatic and beyond proud about his accomplishment. Personal projects can be as complex or as simple as the student chooses it to be.

Sellapan develops important prototype

Richmond Mayor Stoney and Democratic gubernatorial candidate McAulliffe recognize IB senior Alagappan Sellappan for his work in producing computer prototypes in his internship at VCU Computer Science Lab.

HHSIB Adds IB Career-related Program!

We are pleased to announce the official authorization of Henrico High School’s IB Career-related Program (IBCP) by the International Baccalaureate Organization!  This is HCPS’s third IB program, creating a trifecta in conjunction with the IB Middle Years and IB Diploma programs.  The CP is a hybrid program in which students take Diploma Program courses as well as CTE courses, blending academic rigor with life and workplace readiness. Students also participate through the CP core by taking a capstone course, Personal and Professional Skills, and by doing service learning, language study, and creating a reflective project exploring an ethical dilemma in their chosen career pathway. Students who successfully complete the program are awarded certification in their career path and the IBCP Certificate. Beginning in September 2021, Henrico HS will welcome the inaugural IBCP class of juniors who will complete the globally renowned two-year program upon graduation in June 2023.

HHS Mock Trial Teams Score Big at State!

Henrico High fielded three teams. All three made it to the final round of competition for the top 10 teams, where we captured the state championship. We just missed having a Henrico-Henrico final by a few points. Our other teams finished third and seventh (with the seventh-place team composed mostly of freshmen and sophomores). Of the six top attorney awards given, three went to Henrico: Shriya Chemudupati, Christine Guarnieri, and Nia Boyd (in her first year on the team!).

We will be representing Virginia at the National High School Mock Trial Competition taking place virtually in May.

I am incredibly proud of how hard these students have worked during the pandemic and through the difficulty of losing their teacher-sponsor, Ms. Nelson. They have worked 20+ hours a week on Zoom over the last few months with me plus much more on their own. I am particularly proud of the seniors, who are the founders of the program and who have been teaching trial skills to our new members. They are truly a special bunch.

Here are the students and their teams:

First place team:

Faith Dixon (IB 11)

Medha Durisheti (IB 12)

Christine Guarnieri (IB 12)
