HHS Mock Trial Teams Score Big at State!

Henrico High fielded three teams. All three made it to the final round of competition for the top 10 teams, where we captured the state championship. We just missed having a Henrico-Henrico final by a few points. Our other teams finished third and seventh (with the seventh-place team composed mostly of freshmen and sophomores). Of the six top attorney awards given, three went to Henrico: Shriya Chemudupati, Christine Guarnieri, and Nia Boyd (in her first year on the team!).

We will be representing Virginia at the National High School Mock Trial Competition taking place virtually in May.

I am incredibly proud of how hard these students have worked during the pandemic and through the difficulty of losing their teacher-sponsor, Ms. Nelson. They have worked 20+ hours a week on Zoom over the last few months with me plus much more on their own. I am particularly proud of the seniors, who are the founders of the program and who have been teaching trial skills to our new members. They are truly a special bunch.

Here are the students and their teams:

First place team:

Faith Dixon (IB 11)

Medha Durisheti (IB 12)

Christine Guarnieri (IB 12)

Yashita Keswani (IB 12)

Shalini Patel (IB 12)

Sruthi Venkatesan (IB 12)

Third place team:

Shriya Chemudupati (IB 12)

Layla Childress (IB 11)

Sevashtiana Emile (IB 11)

Shriya Nambula (IB 12)

Ritvika Warrier (IB 12)

Daisy Yates (IB 12)

Seventh place team:

More Glory for the HHS Mock Trial Team!

From one of our Mock Trial Team Parents:

“I am writing to share some of the wonderful accomplishments of your Henrico High School Mock Trial team.

This group of then-sophomore students founded the club in 2018, and in their first year, they finished 5th and 7th in the state as result of their hard work and perseverance and dedicated coach. This is an incredible accomplishment for a new mock trial team.

They didn’t stop there. They applied for a national competition called Empire in New York, where you have to be invited to compete. Not only did they get accepted, but they also funded the trip by applying for and receiving an innovation grant from the Henrico Education Foundation—and they received the highest grant amount awarded for that year. The Foundation has been filming competitions and practices to use them as a model for their other grants and solicit additional donations for the Foundation. In addition, the coaches of the team that won the Empire competition (a team from California) were so impressed with the girls that he personally recommended and got my daughter, Christine Guarnieri, accepted to an elite 1 vs. 1 mock trial competition called Gladiator in California this summer.

Now, the teams have been working three or four days a week after school, 8 hours on every Saturday, and many Sundays to prepare for states after sweeping regionals (their three teams finished first, second, and third). They are a pocket of excellence at Henrico High School that should be celebrated. The club started with all IB students, but now it has participation from non-IB students as well. Last year there were two teams; this year there are three, and more students want to join.

The state competition is at the City of Richmond courthouse all day on March 21st  and 22nd. A number of Henrico students will also be volunteering to assist in running the competition. Henrico has a real shot at winning it all and going to the national competition in Indiana this year.”

GO TEAM!!!!!!!!!

National Merit comes to HHS

Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, including several from Henrico schools, in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. More than 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

Among the Henrico Semifinalists is our Mitali Barik from Henrico H.S!!

A not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, NMSC was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and by approximately 400 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goals of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.
