Henrico Teachers win Robert H. Jackson Award for Teaching Justice


Teachers Jeannine Chewning and Colleen Savino traveled to New Orleans in November to attend the National Council of Social Studies Annual Conference and receive the Robert H Jackson Award for Teaching Justice. HEF is excited to have provided financial support for these great teachers to attend this important event.

Seeking community volunteers to work with book clubs

Thanks to The Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce’s Henrico Business Council for its support of Glen Lea Elementary’s One School One Book event this past November. It was a great kick-off to the Adopt-A-School project.

Now we are moving to the next phase of literacy support for Glen Lea—seeking community volunteers to work with book clubs. How can you help? Circulate this opportunity to colleagues and friends interested in making the best investment of all—our community’s kids!image-children_clipart_reading_circle-315x254

Here are the details:

  • Read an assigned book with 3-4 students for 4-6 weeks.
  • Volunteers may specify preferences (3-5; boys or girls, etc.) and brief training will be provided.
  • Come to Glen Lea once a week during the students’ lunch to discuss the book with them. Your attention and enthusiasm for reading will make a real difference!

HEF’s 4th Annual Corporate Spelling BEE was held on Monday, Nov. 16 at UR’s Jepson Alumni Center. After a year’s absence the BEE trophy once again resides with the team from The Martin Agency! The “spirited” team representing the Henrico School Board was awarded the Buzzy Bee Spirit trophy. Special thanks to Anthem for their event sponsorship. Great prizes, enthusiastic competition, including an Audience Spell round, made for a fun event!

Video Highlights: Challenger Day & HEF’s annual Golf Tournament

The latest edition of “School Matters” features Challenger Day and the positive impact of the event on exceptional education students across Henrico County. Keep watching to see the enthusiasm of our wonderful business partners as they helped raise nearly $50,000 at HEF’s annual Tee-Off for Education golf tournament to provide classroom grants across the county.
