Secondary English Course Descriptions

Core Courses

English 6

This course includes the grammar, writing, research, literature and vocabulary outlined in the 6th grade English SOLs.  Students will develop independence in vocabulary acquisition, read for comprehension a variety of literature, nonfiction, and informational text, and develop narratives, descriptions, and explanations through the writing process.  In the end, students will be prepared to take the VA Reading SOL test in May.

English 6 Advanced

This course includes the grammar, writing, research, literature and vocabulary outlined in the 6th grade English SOLs.  Students will experience inquiry-based instruction through the theme of “Change,” begin a two-year research project, and read a variety of literature in connection to the theme.  In the end, students will be prepared to take the VA Reading SOL test in May.

English 7

This course includes the grammar, writing, research, literature and vocabulary outlined in the 7th grade English SOLs.  Students will study of figurative language, connotations, and analogies, read and analyze a variety of literature, nonfiction, and informational text, and develop persuasive and expository pieces through the writing process.  In the end, students will be prepared to take the VA Reading SOL test in May.

English 7 Advanced

This course includes the grammar, writing, research, literature and vocabulary outlined in the 7th grade English SOLs.  Students will experience inquiry-based instruction through the theme of “Persuasion,” complete a two-year research project, and read a variety of literature in connection to the theme.  In the end, students will be prepared to take the VA Reading SOL test in May.

English 8

This course includes the grammar, writing, research, literature and vocabulary outlined in the 8th grade English SOLs.  Students will describe themes and draw conclusions from literature, continue to develop an appreciation of literary elements, and develop informational, persuasive, and expository pieces through the writing process.  In the end, students will be prepared to take the VA Writing SOL test in March and the VA Reading SOL test in May.

English 8 Advanced

This course includes the grammar, writing, research, literature and vocabulary outlined in the 8th grade English SOLs.  Students will deepen analysis of a variety of literature through text annotation, craft essays that increase insight into literature and life, and begin manipulating grammar and syntax for intended effect.  In the end, students will be prepared to take the VA Writing SOL test in March and the VA Reading SOL test in May.

English 9

This course includes the grammar, writing, research, literature and vocabulary outlined in the 9th grade English SOLs.  Students will apply knowledge of literary terms and forms to analysis of literature and informational materials, write in a variety of forms with an emphasis on analysis and develop research skills in using a variety of print and electronic sources to access information.

English 9 Honors

This course includes the grammar, writing, research, literature and vocabulary outlined in the 9th grade English SOLs.  Students will analyze the meaning and effect of a passage related to grammar and syntax, write increasingly complex essays as a result of studying professional writers, and understand use of rhetorical and literary devices to create meaning.

English 10

This course includes the grammar, writing, research, literature and vocabulary outlined in the 10th grade English SOLs.  Students will read, comprehend, critique, and analyze a variety of literature, develop expository writing skills by analyzing and critiquing peers and professionals, and develop research skills in accessing, evaluating, and organizing information.  In the end, students will be prepared to take the VA Writing SOL test in March.

English 10 Honors

This course includes the grammar, writing, research, literature and vocabulary outlined in the 10th grade English SOLs.  Students will read more complex, layered texts with tone shifts and multiple tones, connect tools of persuasion to the meaning of a work as a whole, and develop a distinct voice as a writer by choosing sentence structures, details, etc.  In the end, students will be prepared to take the VA Writing SOL test in March.

English 11

This course includes the grammar, writing, research, literature and vocabulary outlined in the 11th grade English SOLs.  Students will analyze relations among American literature, history, and culture; refine writing skills with an emphasis on persuasion; and create a documented research project.  In the end, students will be prepared to take the VA Reading SOL test in May.

English 11 Honors

This course includes the grammar, writing, research, literature and vocabulary outlined in the 11th grade English SOLs.  Students will identify prevalent themes, universal characters, and genres in American literature; use the tools of rhetoric to develop persuasive writing; and create an independent, documented, research project.  In the end, students will be prepared to take the VA Reading SOL test in May.

AP English 11, Language & Composition

This course includes the grammar, writing, research, literature and vocabulary outlined in the 11th grade English SOLs and AP Course Guides.  Students will use nonfiction texts to identify and explain use of rhetorical strategies, compose argumentative writing assignments based on readings, and prepare for the Advanced Placement Language and Composition Exam.  In the end, students will be prepared to take the AP Language and Composition Exam and the VA Reading SOL test in May.

English 12

This course includes the grammar, writing, research, literature and vocabulary outlined in the 12th grade English SOLs.  Students will analyze world literature; produce a well-documented research paper; and fine tune learning, thinking, studying, and writing skills.

English 12 Honors/Online English 12 Honors

This course includes the grammar, writing, research, literature and vocabulary outlined in the 12th grade English SOLs.  Students will analyze the development of world literature, refine writing skills, and demonstrate independent and cooperative learning skills.

AP English 12, Literature & Composition

This course includes the grammar, writing, research, literature and vocabulary outlined in the 12th grade English SOLs and AP Course Guides.  Students will focus on the historical and philosophical influences on literature, write pieces that require analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, and prepare for the Advanced Placement Language and Composition Exam.  In the end, students will be prepared to take the AP Literature and Composition in May.

Facilitated Online English 12 Summer

This is the same class as English 12, but a summer, online version. The course is done through Schoology.
