Richard Nixon- Every and Swanson

What: Richard Milhous Nixon was born in 1913 in Yorba Linda, California. Nixon attended Whittier College and Duke Law School. Nixon moved to Washington D.C. with his wife and two children, and got a job working at the Office of Price Administration, under Franklin Roosevelt’s Presidency. Nixon then joined the Navy, and served as an aviation ground officer in the Pacific.  In 1946, he became a member of the House of Representatives. Nixon also served in the Senate and then as Vice President  (for two terms) during the Eisenhower Administration (1953-1961). Nixon ran for Presidency in 1960 but lost to John F. Kennedy. Eight years later, Nixon ran for presidency again, and won the election. He was the 37th President of the United States. He served from 1969 to 1974 and became the only president to resign the office. During his presidency, however, Nixon advocated for women and equality in employment. He also advocated for children living in poverty, as well as the environment. Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which was created to protect human health and the environment. The EPA works to protect human health and the environment, by writing as well as enforcing regulations established by laws that were passed by the United States Congress. During Nixon’s presidency, American astronauts made their first landing on the moon.Nixon is known for being a member of the House Un-American Activities Committee as well as beginning the rapprochement with the Soviet Union by signing the first treaty limiting potentially deadly nuclear arms race. Nixon ended up resigning from office due the the Watergate Scandal, before facing impeachment.

So what: Richard Nixon created the EPA to fix national guidelines and to monitor and enforce them. The EPA was initially charged with the administration of the Clean Water Act of 1972 for regulating industrial wastewater and offering grants for building sewage-treatment facilities. Nixon was also very adamant about helping those living in poverty. He created a corporation called Legal Services Corporation that funded legal assistance for the poor. He revolutionized foreign relations, set a foundation for modern environmental regulations and even advanced women’s right. Nixon passed many bills to help women’s rights that we wouldn’t have today if it wasn’t for him. President Nixon gained world stability through his visits to Beijing and Moscow, he reduced tensions with China and the U.S.S.R. His meetings with the Russian leader created a treaty to limit nuclear weapons.

Now what: Students are taught about Richard Nixon mainly because he is established as the only president to ever resign from office. Nixon was involved in an illegal scandal, referred to as the Watergate Scandal. The Watergate scandal was a robbery inside of the office of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). These burglars were, in fact, connected to President Nixon’s reelection campaign. Nixon was facing impeachment and decided to resign because of this serious scandal. Although Nixon never faced charges, this scandal transformed politics in our country forever. The Watergate scandal has lead our country’s citizens to question their government’s leadership and have a more critical outlook on Nixon’s presidency. I believe that this scandal and Nixon’s presidency changed our country’s outlook on our presidents, as well as our other political leaders,  forever. Although the Watergate scandal is what Nixon is known for, there are however positive aspects of Nixon’s presidency. The EPA has helped to preserve our earth by establishing laws regulation industrial pollutants, consumer chemicals, and greenhouse gases. Nixon’s also helped our country with the nuclear arms control agreements with the Soviet Union and CHina. Thanks to Nixon, the arms reduction pacts and careful diplomacy brought an end to the Cold War. Overall, Nixon has changed our world for the better. Because of him we are able to take precautions and be more careful when selecting our presidents, have a better relationship with the Soviet Union, and well as have a wonderful Environmental Protection Agency which protects our earth.
