WEEK 8: 10/22-10/26

Just want to start off by saying our trip to JAMESTOWN and YORKTOWN was awesome!! I am so proud of how well our class handled the long day. They were polite, attentive, and asked so many awesome questions. I would also like to give a HUGE, HUGE thank you to our awesome parent chaperones. I could not have done it without you all!!  I posted a bunch of pictures to our class instagram (@msfourthandfifth) but am working on getting them posted here too!

In reading, fourth grade students continued to learn about author’s purpose in fiction texts. While students listened to fiction read alouds, we discussed how to look at the author’s words and phrases as well as the characters, setting, and what is happening in the story to identify the author’s purpose. Students are continuing to practice answering question stems and work in their guided reading groups daily. Fifth grade students continued to work on summarizing and main idea.
In writing, fourth and fifth grade students both continued to work on narrative writing of spooky stories. We talked about using the five senses to describe a setting and worked together to develop some really descriptive plot lines. We will get this published and ready this week!

In social studies, fourth grade just started a new unit focusing on Jamestown as the first permanent settlement. We will be discussing the reasons for English Colonization, the 4 reasons of why the Jamestown settlement site was chosen and the importance of the charters. Click here for our VS-3studyguide for our current unit. Fifth grade is continuing our study of Henrico History and wrapping up our Henrico Advertising Executive project!
