“Hello, Bonjour, Buenos Dias”… weren’t out 1st graders just fabulous performers on Multi-cultural night? I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

We are also 100 days smarter too! 

What we will be learning this week:

Language Arts– reviewing theme of a story (the lesson or moral); phonics sound of: ar/or (star, car, store, more)

Word Wall Words: made, long, going, by, today

Math– time to the half hour; calendar review

Science– dissolving experiments



February 18-22, 2019

Thank you SO much for the delicious chocolates, flowers, kind notes, what a way to spread kindness on Valentines day! his week we are looking forward to sharing our Multi-cultural night writing with you and performing. Here are a few reminders:

  1.  Children need to wear their class field trip t-shirt (or a lime/light green t-shirt,) blue jeans, and tennis shoes.
  2.  Parent drop off in the hallway by the cafeteria between 6:00 and 6:10 p.m.  (Mrs. Hartman will stand in the hall to guide parents to the gym and students to their classroom.)
  3.  Parents keep the children’s coats because students will not be returning to their classroom after they preform.
  4.  Parents will pick their children up in the gym after the students perform.

What we will be learning this week:

Language Arts– what is the theme in a story? Review ABC order

Math– telling time to the hour

Science– Solids, Liquids, and Gas

Writing– using “voice” in our writing


Monday, February 18th- is a full day of school!

Thursday, February 21st- 100th day of school! Students are invited to wear a shirt with a number on it (any number is fine!) OR can decorate one to wear for the 100th day.

February 11-15, 2019

Hello families,

We want to wish a very happy February birthday to Eduardo, Divyataa, and Kendall! If your child is participating in our class valentine exchange, please send those in on Thursday, Feb. 14th.  Report cards will come home on Monday! You may keep the hard copy of the report card, however please sign and return the yellow envelope on Tuesday.

  • LIbrary news- fill out the Flying Squirrels reading bookmark for a free ticket to the Squirrels game on April 18th! It’s a lot of fun and the kids get to parade on the field! I have been the last several years and it is a fun night for all!
  • We will have our 2nd Young Scientist lesson this coming Friday on Matter!
  • A bright pink permission slip came home on Friday. This contains the information about the First Grade Performance at the Multi-Cultural Museum on Thursday, February 21. Please let us know if your child is able to attend.
  • Scholastic book orders for February are due February 15th.

Math: Fractions of a whole and fractions of a set

Language Arts: Plot vs Theme (the moral of the story)

Sight words for the week: friend, little, how, do, there

Writing: finishing our Multi-cultural projects

Social Studies: Presidents Day and famous Virginians review

  • February 18 is now a full day of school
  • February 21 – Multicultural Museum – first grade will also be performing!

February 4-8, 2019

Early Spring (or so says the groundhog!) This week certainly looks to support this. On Monday, students will be bringing home a class list for our Valentine exchange on Thursday, February 14th. Please do not bring in valentines until that Thursday!

What we will be learning this week:

Language Arts– the plot of a story (BME); words with the “ar” sound (star, car, starve, jar)

New Word Wall Words: does, walk, no, so be

Math– understanding fractions (whole, 1/2, 1/4)

Writing– working on our multi-cultural night writing

Social Studies– Famous Virginians: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Arthur Ashe, Maggie Walker
