Dear Families,

I wish everyone a safe and wonderful winter break! I look forward to welcoming everyone back on Thursday, January 3rd. PLEASE remember to READ and utilize Raz Kids/Reflex Math over break! It makes a huge difference to keep that routine going over a break.

This week will be a spirit week:

  • Monday – Mix it up Monday or wear your PJs! (no slippers)
  • Tuesday – Wear tacky holiday clothes
  • Wednesday – Wear your favorite winter outfit (hats included)

There will be no written homework this week, we will resume our weekly routine on January 7th.

What we will be learning this week:

Language: story retell (beginning, middle, end), silent e added to short o words, using bold beginnings in our writing, sight words make, came, what, over, her

Math: addition/subtraction strategies using +10/-10

Science:  Winter weather- how plants, animals and people adapt to the change in the weather.

Social Studies: holiday traditions around the world

It’s a winter wonderland! I hope everyone is enjoying their snow days:) There will be NO written homework this week, however the days off are a great opportunity to READ, READ, READ!
  • Interim grades will be sent home the next time we are in school. Please sign and return them the following day.
  • THANK YOU for those who have volunteered to donate materials or your time for the holiday celebration on Tuesday, December 18th! If you have volunteered your time, please be sure you have filled out a volunteer form for the 2018-2019 school year. Without this form, the office will not allow you to come to the classroom. Forms can be found here:
What we are learning this week:

Math: addition and subtraction +/- 10 strategy (3+10=13; 22-10=12)

Language Arts: Phonics/phonemic awareness (sounding out sounds within words)

 Sight words:  make, came, and over -be sure you are practicing how to spell, write and read these words!

Writing: Strong leads, bold beginnings and strong transitions in our writing

Science: Winter – seasonal changes and how they affect people, animals, and plants.

  • Tuesday, December 18th is our winter celebration from 12:00-1:00pm
  • Winter Break begins December 20th. School resumes January 3rd

Reminders for this week:

This Friday is Cubs Night In! – Fun, Fun, Fun with your teachers! $15 per child.

Please make sure that your 1st grader is coming to school with appropriate winter gear (coat, hat, gloves.) We do make an effort to get outside for fresh air!

This week we will learn about the following:

Language:  identifying character traits from the outside and inside, getting information from pictures when we read non-fiction text

sight words for the week: all, down, want, now, have

Math:  Adding doubles 0-12 (0+0 2+2 12+12 etc).

Science: Sun and how it gives Earth heat and light, day/night and the rotation of the Earth
