October 1-5, 2018

Hi Families,

We are hoping for a sunnier start to October and looking forward to spotting some signs of Fall as we move into the season. We were sad to say farewell to Abhinav and his family as they move to TN, we wish him the best!

Important Reminders:

  • Please let me know if you have any questions about homework. The sight words that came home are meant to be practiced during the 1st nine weeks.  Students should be reading about 15 minutes a night. Homework should not all be completed in one night.
  • If you paid for the field trip t-shirts and dictionaries online, please be sure to send in the bottom of the blue form to tell me what size t-shirt to order.

What we will be learning this week:

Math: We will continue to review repeating patterns and learn about growing patterns. For example, building stairs out of blocks is a growing pattern. (A, AB, ABC, ABCD)

Language Arts: comprehension of non-fiction texts

Writing: last week we created a writing from the heart organizer to help us develop ideas when we write. This week we will explore what a complete sentence looks like, focusing on a capital letter at the beginning and punctuation at the end.

Social Studies: We will begin a new unit on the American flag and Pledge of Allegiance along with Virginia symbols, including our state flag, state flower: the dogwood, state bird: the cardinal, and state capitol building in downtown Richmond.

What a fantastic first week in first grade we had!!  Welcome to our classroom blog!  Please plan to read it weekly as it will contain important information.  Please also explore the PTA tab and the Wish List tab. Many thanks to Lyric’s family for contributing to our classroom wish list already:)

There will be no homework this week. Homework will be explained during Back to School Night on Thursday, September 20th. *Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. This is a parental  opportunity to learn more about first grade curriculum.  Unfortunately, there will not be time for us to discuss your child’s individual progress. I will look forward to sharing your child’s progress with you at our parent teacher conferences in early November.
