Welcome to the first week of SOLs! We worked hard all year to hone our comprehension skills, and now’s the time to put it all together! Our Reading SOLs are given in two parts, each part having approximately 20 questions each. Students are given as much time is needed to complete the tests. We are really working to practice using the skills we have learned in order to do our very best. The greatest challenge usually lies in taking the time to really analyze both the question and all answer choices in order to make the best choice.
At home, as you know, Study Island to help them review the skills we have learned this year. The SOLs are solely based on 3rd grade material, so it is best to go to VA Programs/3rd Grade when doing your nightly practice. This link to the VA Department of Education which has released items that you can use to practice as well. You can print off released SOL tests to practice at home, as they are actual tests and very similar to what your child will see this week.
This week we will focus on practicing reading strategies, complete our study of patterns, research with biographies and autobiographies of famous Americans as well as our Wax Museum individuals. Homework will consist of reading and math practice, spelling (list 19), and reviewing journals nightly. The poetry packet that came home last week is not due until June 1st.
Students should be finished with their research by Wednesday. If you have not read your biography, please read that book for your 20 minutes of reading. Students are welcome to bring their research packets home as well, but they must be brought back to school EVERY DAY. The Wax Museum will be held on Thursday, May 31st. This is a highlight of 3rd grade every year and we look forward to experiencing it with you all. Please plan on being at KES anytime between 9am-10am to view the Wax Exhibit.
Don’t forget to check under the “Homework” tab to see what our focus is in school and what is expected at home. This is updated weekly along with the blog in order to keep you connected. As always, let me know if you have any questions!
