Week of April 30th

It’s hard to believe that May is upon us! Please remember to have your child practice their skills using Study Island to help them review the skills we have learned this year. The SOLs are solely based on 3rd grade material, so it is best to go to VA Programs/3rd Grade when doing your nightly practice. Below, you will find a link to the VA Department of Education which has released items that you can use to practice as well. This week we will continue to study (and write) poetry, review patterns in math, and after testing European explorers on Thursday, we will move on to studying Famous Americans. Homework will consist of reading and math practice, spelling (list 18), finishing up with explorers and finally moving to Famous Americans. A poetry packet will  also come home. This is not due until June 1st.

We will present our Wax Museum on Thursday, May 31st. This is a highlight of 3rd grade every year! Students have all chosen their individuals and we are beginning to take notes, answer questions, and record our research findings. Please plan on being at KES anytime between 9am-10am to view the Wax Exhibit.  Please check in with your child periodically about their progress.  This project will be done mainly in class, however it is important that all students are using their class time wisely.  By now all students should have finished reading their books, found a student safe website from the Library Learning Commons Research Toolbox as an additional resource, and be about halfway through completing their research packet.

Please make a note of these to assure your child will be present and able to take the SOLs with the rest of us. Remember, Study Island is a great resource to help prepare for these assessments. The VA Department of Education also offers practice tests and released test questions for the SOLs. We will be practicing with these at school, but highly encourage you to take some time to have some one-on-one practice at home as well!
