This week we have been learning:
In Math, we will be learning about Elapsed Time. A quiz on Elapsed Time will be on Tuesday, April 10th. Then we will begin our next unit measurement. We will learn about U.S. Customary & Metric units, how to read a ruler, and how to make metric conversions. A quiz on measurement will be on Wednesday, April 18th.
In Reading, we will be learning about Poetry. We will be studying about rhyme, haiku, explicit & implicit questions in poetry, & imagery in poetry. We will conclude our class novel, The Devil’s Arithmetic, about a 11 year old girl’s experience & survival once she time travels to WWII at a concentration camp.
In Writing/ Word Study, we will be working on word choice to strengthen our author’s voice in our writing. We will also be using the figurative language & different types of poetry that we learned about to write the different styles of poetry we have learned. We will get our Word Trek & Word study words this week. Please look for the April 9th Closed Sort for correct information. Word Trek & Word Study tests will be on Friday, April 20th.
In Science, we will review for and will take our unit test on Tuesday, April 10th. We will then begin our next unit reviewing the 4th grade unit on Force & Motion. We will learn about friction, potential & kinetic energy, and the different types of energy (electric, solar, gravity, chemical, mechanical, radiant, & thermal).
Race Cards: To help prepare for our Science SOL test that is quickly approaching (eek!), we will begin review all the 5th grade units through race cards. There will be given out for each student to borrow on a Friday & the quiz will be the next Thursday. This will serve 3 purposes: (1) it will help review the important vocabulary and facts for memorization to help prepare for the SOL test, (2) it will be grades for the (end of) 3rd 9 weeks & 4th 9 weeks for Science, & (3) the students who earn an 80% or better will earn extra recess on the Friday after their quiz!! A much needed break as we get into the SOL prep season for them to have another break from all their hard work & enjoy the beautiful warmer weather outside with their friends. The quizzes will be exactly what is on the cards with a word bank provided. The goal of these cards is to simply aid in memorizing all the vocabulary & facts for each 5th grade science unit. We will build on this in our in-class preparations to help them apply this information when answering SOL questions.
