This week we have been learning:

In Math, we will begin our next unit on Probability on Friday. We will learn about possible outcomes, tree diagrams, and sample spaces. We will have a quiz on probability on Wednesday, December 19th. 

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will focus character development. We use what we learned previously with character traits to determine how a character develops or changes throughout a text. We will continue our small group guided reading/novel studies this week. 

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will focus on conjunctions. 

In Science, we will conclude our unit on Kingdoms. We will review what we have learned & take our unit test on Kingdoms will be on Friday, December 14th. We will begin our next unit on Monday on reviewing 4th grade plant & animal adaptations. We will have a quiz on this on Monday, January 7th.

This week we have been learning:

In Math, we will continue our next unit on fraction computation. This week we will focus on multiplying fractions by a whole number, word problems, reviewing all computation and taking our test on Thursday, December 6th. Then we will begin our next unit on Probability on Friday. 

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will focus theme. We will look at main idea vs. theme, look at common themes, how to determine the theme of a text, and comparing themes. We will continue our small group guided reading/novel studies this week. 

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will focus on commas as interrupters. We will have a quiz on interrupters on Friday, December 7th.

In Science, we will begin our next unit on Kingdoms. We will look at how organisms are classified and look at dichotomous keys for identification. We will examine the 5 kingdoms, and look more specifically at that animal & plant kingdoms. We will learn how the animals in the animal kingdom are further classified and learn about vertebrates vs invertebrates. We will also look at the plant kingdom more closely and look at vascular vs non-vascular plants. We will have a Young Scientist lesson on cells & kingdoms on Wednesday, December 5th. Our unit test on Kingdoms will be on Tuesday, December 11th.

This week we have been learning:

In Math, we will begin our next unit on fraction computation. This week we will focus on adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators. We will also subtract with regrouping, and addition and subtraction fraction practical word problems.

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will focus on prefix, suffix, and root words. We will look at how they affect the meaning of a root word and identify when those same letters are at the beginning or end of a word, and aren’t used as a prefix/suffix (i.e.: rewrite= to write again vs. read)We will continue our small group guided reading/novel studies this week. 

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will focus on adjectives and adverbs. We will look at them and comparison adjectives and adverbs.

In Science, we will conclude our unit on cells. We will learn about plant cells, and review everything we have learned about cells. We will have a quiz on plant & animal cells on Tuesday, November 27th. Our unit test will be on Friday, November 30th.

This week we have been learning:

In Math, we will working on reviewing our math concepts from this year, with a Thanksgiving theme. We will be planning a Thanksgiving dinner and working on creating order of operations turkeys.

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will focus on fact vs. opinion. We will continue our small group guided reading/novel studies this week. 

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will conclude our essay called, The Best Part of Me. We will finalize our paragraphs and then edit, revise, and publish our 5 paragraph essay.

In Science, we will conclude our unit on cells. We will learn about animal cells. Our unit test will be on Friday, November 30th.

This week we have been learning:

In Math, we will conclude our unit on fractions/decimals/percents/ratios. We will focus this week ratios, while reviewing & showing how it connects to fractions, decimals, & percents.  We will have a test on Friday, November 16th.

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will continue to focus on nonfiction text structures. We will focus specifically on identifying signal words for text structures and look at description, cause & effect, and problem & solution. We will have a quiz on all 5 nonfiction text structures on Friday, November 16th. We will continue our small group guided reading/novel studies this week. 

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will continue to focus on our essay called, The Best Part of Me. We will continue to work on making our 4-square and drafting/editing/revising our 5 paragraph essay.

In Science, we will conclude our unit on oceanography. We will learn about the ocean food chains/food webs. We will have our Young Scientist on Oceanography on Tuesday, November 13th. Our unit test will be on Thursday, November 15th. Then we will begin our next unit on Cells.

November 5th – 9th

This week we have been learning:

In Math, we will conclude our unit on decimals.  Our unit quiz on rounding of decimals & decimal computation on Monday, November 5th. Then we will begin our next unit on fractions/decimals/percents/ratios. We will focus this week on reviewing turning fractions into decimals and vice versa and turning fractions & decimals into percents. We will have a graded seatwork on Friday, November 9th.

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will focus on nonfiction text structures. We will focus specifically on identifying signal words for text structures and look at sequencing and compare & contrast. We will continue our small group guided reading/novel studies this week. 

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will focus on our HCPS alternative writing assessment for the 1st 9 weeks. We will focus on the planning portion of the writing process. Then we will begin an essay called, The Best Part of Me. We will read a picture book and each student will write about what they feel is the best feature/part of them. 

In Science, we will continue our unit on oceanography. We will learn about the parts of the different zones of the ocean’s environment. We will talk about how pressure, temperature, salinity, and light change with depth. We will also look more closely at the ocean’s salinity and what causes the ocean’s currents. Our unit test will be on Wednesday, November 14th.
