This week we have been learning:

In Math, we will be learning about geometric & numeric patterns. We will look at consistent, growing, & repeating patterns, as well as input/output boxes.  We will have a quiz on Thursday, February 14th.

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will focus on finding text evidence to support opinions/predictions/conclusions. We will continue our small group guided reading/novel studies this week. 

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will focus on editing/revising/finalizing writing our paragraphs for our Multicultural Night Project. The information sheet was sent home last Friday, it should be in your child’s geography folder.

In Science, we will begin our next unit on Matter. We will learn about atoms, molecules, elements, compounds, mixtures, & solutions. We will have a quiz on atoms & molecules on Thursday, February 14th.

Richmond Flyer Squirrel’s Bookmark

The Richmond Flying Squirrels are pleased to announce that the Flying Squirrels Reading Program, “Go Nuts for Reading!” is back for its tenth season! This year’s program, which will run through Wednesday, March 20th 2019, is open to all CTES to participate! After reading 8 books and signing your child’s bookmark, your child will receive a FREE baseball voucher to the 6:35 pm April 18th baseball game. It will be a fun-filled night, beginning with a school parade around the diamond and ending with (fingers crossed) a win for our Flying Squirrels!! Look for more information in the Cub Chronicle and lets “play ball!”

February 4th-8th

In Math, we will be learning about linear equations. We will solve equations to determine the value of the variable. We will also learn about a term, coefficient, variable, expression, equations, equality & inequality. We will have a quiz on Friday, February 8th.

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will focus on root word meanings. We will continue our small group guided reading/novel studies this week. 

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will focus on word choice & on writing our paragraphs for our Multicultural Night Project. The information sheet was sent home on Friday, it should be in your child’s geography folder.

In Geography, we will conclude our unit on the Northeast region of the United States. We will have our open-book test on the NE region on Friday, February 8th.

January 28th-February 1st

This week we have been learning:

In Math, we will be reviewing for & taking our 5/6 math benchmark test on Thursday 1/31 & Friday 2/1.

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will focus on inferences. We will continue our small group guided reading/novel studies this week and will do our mid-year Fountas & Pinnell reading testing. We will take a quiz on inferences on Friday, February 1st.

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will focus on research and writing to inform. We will research and write a biography about a famous African American. We also took our 2nd 9 weeks HCPS Alternative Writing Assessment on composing an essay. On Friday, we will explain & send home information about our Multicultural Night project. Be on the lookout in your child’s writing folder.

In Geography, we will begin our unit on the Northeast region of the United States. We will have our quiz on the NE region’s states, abbreviations, & capitals on Thursday, January 31st. We will learn about the NE region’s states & capitals, land & water, products & natural resources, climate, culture, people, & landmarks.

After School Enrichment

2019 Winter After School Enrichment Classes

Classes will begin the week of February 11 and will run through the week of March 18. 

If you have a PTA Membership, you will have first “choice” on ASE Classes!! 

ASE registration for PTA Membership begins January 22nd – 24th. 

Regular ASE registration begins Friday, January 25. 

Registration deadline is Monday, February 4, 2019.

This week we have been learning:

In Math, we will have a test on MMMR on Tuesday, January 22nd. Then we will begin our next unit on variables in algebra. We will have a graded seat work on variables on Friday, January 25th. 

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will focus on reference materials. We will look at which is the best reference material to use in different situations and how to use each type of reference material. We will continue our small group guided reading/novel studies this week and will do our mid-year Fountas & Pinnell reading testing.

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will focus on possessives. We will have a quiz on possessives on Thursday, January 24th. We will also take our mid-year DSA (spelling assessment) to determine spelling growth and our instructional path moving forward.

In Geography, we will continue our unit on the Southeast region of the United States. We will have our quiz on the SE region’s states, abbreviations, & capitals on Tuesday, January 22nd. We will learn about the SE region’s products & natural resources, climate, culture, people, & landmarks. We will have an open-book test on the SE region on Friday, January 25th.

This week we have been learning:

In Math, we will continue to work on our unit on Mean, Median, Mode, & Range. We will learn how to calculate each one as well as determine which what would be the most appropriate measure of center in a given scenario. We will also learn about determining the mean or balance point of a set of data. We will have a test on MMMR on Tuesday, January 22nd.

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will focus practicing & reviewing for our reading benchmark test with fiction and nonfiction passages. We will also discuss test taking skills & strategies. We will continue our small group guided reading/novel studies this week and will do our mid-year Fountas & Pinnell reading testing.

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will focus on possessives. We will have a quiz on possessives on Thursday, January 24th.

In Geography, we will continue our unit in Geography on the basics of geography & map skills. We will learn the different types of maps & the information we can gain from each of them. We will have an open-book assessment on Wednesday, January 16th. Then we will begin our next unit on the Southeast region of the United States.

Muffins with Moms

We are excited to welcome Catava Burton, HCPS Educational Specialist, to Muffins with Moms, January 18, from 8-8:30am.

In her “Are You Smarter than Your Child’s Smart Phone?” workshop she will share the latest texting slang, secret apps, and social media tricks.  Information will also be provided on bullying/cyberbullying, human trafficking, internet safety, and psychological impact of these issues.  Strategies will be provided to help parents keep their children safe.  Bring your smart phone!

In Science, we will conclude our unit on reviewing 4th grade plant & animal adaptations. We will have a quiz on this on Tuesday, January 8th.

In Geography, we will begin our next unit in Geography on the basics of geography & map skills. We will learn the different types of maps & the information we can gain from each of them. We will have an open-book assessment on Monday, January 14th.
