This week we have been learning:

In Math, we will be learning about the distributive property & start reviewing all our 6th grade skills to prepare for spring math MAPS testing.

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will focus on context clues & facts and opinions. There will be a quiz on context clues on Wednesday, April 17th. Our guided reading groups will be focused on working on each groups specific needs to prepare for spring reading MAPS testing.

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will focus on writing a persuasive essay. 

In Science, we will be reviewing electricity & magnetism from 4th grade. We will have a quiz on this on Friday, April 19th. Our 2nd race card quiz will be on Tuesday, March 16th. The students get to borrow these for the week to prepare for their quiz on this 5th grade science review topic. The race cards must be returned on the quiz day. The students who earn a score of 80% or greater are rewarded with an additional 30 minutes of recess. We will be doing 7 review units between now & our science SOL test in May.

This week we have been learning:

In Math, we will be learning about metric measurements further, and will review metric measurements in addition to perimeter, area, & volume. We will have a test on ALL of measurement (metric & P/A/V) on Wednesday, April 10th. Then we will learn about the distributive property & start reviewing all our 6th grade skills to prepare for spring math MAPS testing.

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will focus on dictionary skills. Our guided reading groups will be focused on working on each groups specific needs to prepare for spring reading MAPS testing.

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will focus on writing a “how to” essay & the HCPS Alternative writing assessment

In Science, we will be reviewing force & motion from 4th grade. We will have a quiz onn this on Friday, April 12th. Our 2nd race card quiz will be on Tuesday, March 16th. The students get to borrow these for the week to prepare for their quiz on this 5th grade science review topic. This week we have been learning:

In Math, we will be learning about volume and then metric measurements. When we return from Spring Break, we will look at metric measurements further, and will review metric measurements in addition to perimeter, area, & volume. We will have a test on ALL of measurement (metric & P/A/V) on Wednesday, April 10th.

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will focus on cause & effect and compare & contrast text structures. We will continue our small group guided reading this week. 

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will focus on writing a “how to” essay.

In Science, a 3rd 9 weeks extra credit opportunity was sent home in Tuesday folders. This is due Thursday, March 28th. Extra credit will not be accepted late, but will happily be taken early! Our 1st race cards quiz will be on Monday. The students get to borrow these for the week to prepare for their quiz on this 5th grade science review topic. The race cards must be returned on the quiz day. The students who earn a score of 80% or greater are rewarded with an additional 30 minutes of recess. We will be doing 7 review units between now & our science SOL test in May.We will get a new set of race cards on the Monday we return from Spring Break. Our 2nd race card quiz will be on Tuesday, March 16th.

In Geography, we will be finishing up learning about the Midwest region of the US. We will learn about the products & natural resources, landmarks & people/culture. We will have our open book test on the Midwest Region on Friday, March 29th.

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will continue to focus on nonfiction text features and we have a quiz on Wednesday, March 20th. Then we will focus our mini lessons on cause/effect. We will continue our small group guided reading this week. 

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will focus on quotations.

March 4th-8th

This week we have been learning:

In Math, we will be learning about combining, subdividing, and transformations of polygons. We will have a quiz on Friday, March 8th.

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will focus on poetry. We are looking at poems more in-depth and answering questions about poetry. We will continue our small group guided reading/novel studies this week. 

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will focus on word choice & writing poetry.

In Science, we will conclude our uni on Light. We will review everything we have learned and we will have a test on Tuesday, March 5th. Then we will begin our next unit on Sound. We will learn about the structure of a sound wave and explore how sound travels and how it travels through matter differently. A sound project information sheet will be coming home on Tuesday, March 5th. The project will be due on Thursday, March 14th. We will have our unit test on Wednesday, March 13th.

February 25th-March 1st

This week we have been learning:

In Math, we will be learning about classifying triangles by both sides and angles. We will also learn to determine the missing angle measurement using the other 2 angles’ measurements. We will have a quiz on Friday, March 1st.

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will focus on poetry. We are looking at the parts of a poem and different types of poems. We will continue our small group guided reading/novel studies this week. 

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will focus on word choice & writing poetry.

In Science, we will began our unit on Light. We will learn about the visible spectrum, how light travels through different mediums, the structure of a light wave, and the historical figures connected with light. We will have a test on Tuesday, March 5th.

In Math, we will be learning about classifying and measuring angles as well as congruence. We will look at using a protractor to measure angles. We will have a quiz on Friday, February 22nd.

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will focus on figurative language. We will continue our small group guided reading/novel studies this week. 

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will focus on interjections. 

In Science, we will conclude our unit on Matter. We will learn about atoms, molecules, elements, compounds, mixtures, & solutions, and physical & chemical changes. We will have a test on Friday, February 22nd.

This week we have been learning:

In Math, we will be learning about geometric & numeric patterns. We will look at consistent, growing, & repeating patterns, as well as input/output boxes.  We will have a quiz on Thursday, February 14th.

In Reading, our mini lessons this week will focus on finding text evidence to support opinions/predictions/conclusions. We will continue our small group guided reading/novel studies this week. 

In Writing, our mini lessons this week will focus on editing/revising/finalizing writing our paragraphs for our Multicultural Night Project. The information sheet was sent home last Friday, it should be in your child’s geography folder.

In Science, we will begin our next unit on Matter. We will learn about atoms, molecules, elements, compounds, mixtures, & solutions. We will have a quiz on atoms & molecules on Thursday, February 14th.
