WEEK OF DECEMBER 17
Spelling Bee: Congratulations to our Spelling Bee Class Champion, Vidhi! It was a great competition between our three finalists: Vidhi, Nikolas, and Aidan S. The school spelling bee will be on Monday at 8:30 am. Vidhi’s parents are invited to attend in the gym along with our class! We will be cheering her on!
Colonial Craft Day: Thank you so much to all of the parents that have volunteered next week to help out with our Colonial Craft Day with their time or supplies. I think at this point, we just need someone to volunteer to bring in 25 snack-sized turkey rolls (on White House rolls). Thank you again! Today, I am sending home a homework assignment for the students to bring in a bag and an orange for next week’s CCD. We discussed this in class, but for the project to work the best, we do need for it to be an orange (not a clementine or other citrusy fruit).
Catapult Building Volunteer: We will be doing our Catapult Project next week as well (what a busy week!). To do this, we will need just one parent volunteer (we are also having volunteers from the other classes as well) to come in on Tuesday from 8:15-10. We will have this parent (plus one from each other class) stationed in the STEM Lab to help with the heavy building and cutting materials for this project. I will go over more specifics on Tuesday morning with that group of parents.
Traveling?: If you will be traveling and your child will be missing school next week, please let me know ahead of time. This will greatly help with our planning for the week.
Polar Express Friday: Along with it being our Jingle Bell Jam on Friday, we will have our Fourth Grade Polar Express Day! Your child will be invited to wear his/her pajamas, although she/he will also need to have tennis shoes for the JBJ. I will send out more information on this next week.
Here is the schedule for next week:
Monday 12/17: Catapult Project (Research)
Planets Menu Due
Send in Colonial Craft Day craft items
Tuesday 12/18: Catapult Project (Building)

WEEK OF DECEMBER 3
Do you have a good multiplication or division fact practice website? Please send it to me by Monday, December 3, so I can compile them and put them on the blog! If it is a paid subscription, let me know so I can list that too. Thanks!
We will be working on elapsed time (to the minute) this week. This is a tough skill and it needs work at home as well as school. Ask your child: “We need to leave the house in 15 minutes. What time will that be?” or say, “You should sleep for 9 hours. If you need to wake up at 6:30, what time should you go to sleep the night before?” These are all difficult problems, but it will help them to understand the importance of elapsed time (and practice it!).
We are continuing the study of outer space. The focus this week will be the moon and its phases, the seasons (and why we have them), and we will start a research menu about the solar system. Over the next 10 days, I will be requesting that the students go and observe the moon each night (even on weekends, please). They will have a form in their ISN to fill out for each night. They will get a grade for the completion of it. If there is an overcast night, they should record that as well.
Our Word Study quiz will be available for students to take from Wednesday, December 5-Friday, December 7. Students may pick any of those days to take it. Contracts will be due on Friday, December 7. In class, we will be doing a picture book lesson on summarizing.
We will also be starting a culture project to help understand holidays that are celebrated around the world in the months of November, December, and January. Each student will be picking and researching a holiday that is different than one that they may celebrate. We will discuss the details next week.
We will be continuing the study of colonial life in Virginia and moving on to the Revolutionary War. On Tuesday, December 4, students will take a quiz on colonial life.
