April

Math
We will be starting our study of geometry this week. We will discuss the difference between solid (3D) and plane shapes (2D), start to discuss the different types of polygons, and learn about lines, line segments, rays, and angles.

Science
This week, we will discuss seed dispersal, the reproductive parts of a flower, and how plants reproduce. Please let me know if your child is highly allergic to flowers (azaleas). We will be dissecting flowers on Friday, and I will need to make alternate arrangements ahead of time if students are not able to do this graded lab.

VA Studies
This week we will learn about George C. Marshall, Harry F. Byrd, and their contributions to Virginia’s history.

Language Arts
We are fine-tuning our reading skills, as we work on leveled short reads. This will be our focus for the remainder of the year, as we get ready for our SOL test in Reading. We will continue with our novel studies as well. We will meet in our NS groups on Wednesday.

Class Placement Process:
Each year, teachers, counselors, and administrators work together closely during May and June to create the best possible classroom communities for the following year. We invite you to give input to the placement process if you believe that there is information about your child that might be overlooked. However, please observe the following guidelines:

-Submit your information in writing directly to Dr. Schwab between April 17 and May 1.
-Remember that parent information submitted in previous years will not be part of the process.
-Work directly with administrators (who will make the final placement decisions) rather than with your child’s current teacher.
-We would also like to make you aware that our staffing predictions for 2012-2013 are for an enrollment decrease from approximately 730 students to approximately 640 students.  Therefore, to avoid any last minute confusion or disappointment for the children if adjustments must be made later in the summer, we plan to send out our placement letters in August this year.

Thank you for your understanding and support! –Regina Schwab

Hi Parents! I hope you all had a great spring break! We are back and ready to learn in Room 31. It’s hard to believe that we have just 9 weeks left of the school year, and we have so much to achieve in that little amount of time.

Here is an overview of what we will be accomplishing this week:

Math: We are starting the new unit of probability this week. While we are going to be reviewing the vocabulary words impossible, unlikely, equally likely, likely, certain, we will also connect these to numbers on a number line. We will also be using real-life examples to make these concepts come to life.

Science: We are starting our Plant Unit this week. We wills talk about the basic parts of plants and photosynthesis. There will be a quiz on this information on Friday, April 20.

VA Studies: We are entering the 20th century in Virginia History! While we look into the events and people that were important to our government and history in the 20th century, we will also begin looking back to the beginning of the year with our Marathon to the Governor’s Mansion review game.

Marathon to the Governor’s Mansion: Students will all start on Race 1. They will be given a set of review cards, and they should study those throughout the next couple of days. They will then take a quiz on that material. If they score a 90% or higher on the quiz, they will move on to Race 2 (with a new set of cards). If they score lower than a 90%, they will need to study and re-take that quiz on the next Race Day. We will have Race Days on Tuesdays and Fridays. If a child does not feel prepared to take a quiz on a Race Day, they can use that time in class to study. The first time a child takes a Race quiz, it will count as a grade. They should make sure they are prepared before they take the quiz. There are more to come on incentives later.
