This Week

Mr. Schieber’s Class

May 13 – 17, 2019

I am truly thankful for all of the acts of appreciation that I have experienced throughout this past week. The plants and flowers, the classroom supplies, the gift cards, the words of affirmation, all of these things make me realize how lucky I am to be at Short Pump Elementary. Thank you for all of the personal touches and the great notes that make me remember why I chose this profession.

The end of the year is quickly approaching and that brings many fun and exciting days of learning, as well as our end-of-the-year assessments.  In addition to our regular curriculum and HAT ‘s (Henrico Achievement Test), we will begin PALS and Fountas & Pinnell in Reading and Math Screeners and a Problem Solving Performance Task in Math. These assessments are used to measure  individual progress in reading skills and number sense.  Although these assessments need no preparation or study and are not part of our curriculum, or graded, it is critical to have students ready for school each day with a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast so they can do their best.  Our work begins in May and continues through the last day of the school year.

What We are Learning:

  • Math – Geometry and Symmetry
    • identify, describe, compare, and contrast plane and solid figures (circles/spheres, squares/cubes, and rectangles/rectangular prisms).
    • draw a line of symmetry in a figure; and identify and create figures with at least one line of symmetry.
  • Social Studies – World Geography
    • develop map skills by using globes and maps of the world to locate  the seven continents and the five oceans; the Equator, the Prime Meridian, and the four hemispheres
