Dear Cardinal families,
Some of you may be familiar with the revised federal law that pertains to schools, known as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). New this year, each state was required to select an additional metric to use for its state accreditation process. The Commonwealth of Virginia, along with over 30 other states, has selected absenteeism as the additional metric. The loss of instructional time has always been a concern for the teaching and learning process here at Shady Grove. However, with this new focus in the context of school accreditation, our staff will monitor more closely students that miss frequent or extended instructional blocks of time. Please know that vacation days away from school will be evaluated with greater scrutiny under our existing attendance policy when the determination is made for excused or unexcused absences. Please make every effort to plan family vacations during the winter and summer school holidays. If you have any questions, please visit our school website under parent resources or call the office to discuss with staff for further clarification.
