Highlights for week 2/11/19-2/15/19

2/11- Report Cards are  coming home- Please sign the  envelopes and return them. You can keep the report cards at home.

2/14- Happy Valentine’s Day!! We will be making a cute valentine bag in class to collect  valentines in. There is no need to send in a decorated box. A list of classmates  came home this week for your child to use to write his/her  classmate’s  names . Please send in a valentine for each student in our class. We have 19 students  , 11 boys and 8 girls. Many are available at the Dollar Store , Walmart and Target.

  • Please return the Valentine photos that were sent home from Strawbridge if you do not want to buy them. The Spring class picture and individuals will be taken on March 14th.

Classes will begin the week of February 11 and will run through the week of March 18. 

If you have a PTA Membership, you will have first “choice” on ASE Classes!! 

ASE registration for PTA Membership begins January 22nd – 24th. 

Regular ASE registration begins Friday, January 25. 

Registration deadline is Monday, February 4, 2019.

Reminder: Please send in a healthy snack daily for your child. Water bottles are permitted in the classroom. Please make sure the lids are on securely so they do not leak in your child’s backpack.  Also please make sure you label  their snack and  lunch  ( if you send it in)  so your child know the difference .

Language Arts  –     Students should know all their capital letters,  lower case letters and sounds by now. It is important to continue reviewing sight words daily to enable your child to read  on grade level. Comprehension is also an important part of being able to read on grade level. Ask your child questions about what he/she reads . Please have your child practice writing their first and their last  names correctly and short sentences by sounding out words.  By the end of this 3rd marking period, your child should know how to read at least 28-32 sight words to be on grade level.

A Valentine Reading Log came home! As you read a book with your child have them color  in a heart!

Focus this week on  “Uu” and Valentine’s Day

Have your children go into RAZ Kids ( which has been paid for by the PTA)  and practice reading stories and answering comprehension questions once they get to a certain level. I sent home letters with your child’s password  the first marking period.   If you misplaced this information just let me know.

Our  themes  in   February are : Groundhog’s Day,  Shadows, Famous Americans, Black History Month, President’s  Day  and Valentine’s Day

Math–  Measurement- Time and Temperature

The measurement tools we use to determine time are  clocks and calendars. The measurement tool we use to determine temperature is a thermometer.

Social Studies- Black History Month   and Famous Americans ( George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Betsy Ross) and President’s Day  ( Washington, Lincoln, Trump)

“Star Student of the Week – Colin  was our “Star Student” this past week. It was fun learning about his family and all his interests.  He put a lot of time into his beautiful poster he brought in!

Please help your child to fill out and color the poster when it is their turn. You can also send in photographs to hang on the poster . A letter will accompany the poster  explaining what is required. Please send this completed poster in the following Monday so your child can share it with the class. I will display it in our classroom and return it home on Friday.

CALLING ALL  MYSTERY READERS!  PLEASE sign up to come in and read a story to the class. All your children are hoping you will come in!!!!!

Readers are asked to bring a book to read or read a teacher-chosen book from our classroom library.

Language Arts  –     Students should know all their capital letters,  lower case letters and sounds by now. It is important to continue reviewing sight words daily to enable your child to read  on grade level. Comprehension is also an important part of being able to read on grade level. Ask your child questions about what he/she reads . Please have your child practice writing their first and their last  names correctly and short sentences by sounding out words.  By the end of this 3rd marking period, your child should know how to read at least 28-32 sight words to be on grade level.

Focus this week on ” QU” as   in quick, quack, quarter ….

Math–  Measurement- Weight (heavy/ light)  and  Capacity

The measurement tools we use to determine weight are  types  of scales ( balance scale or one people stand on)

Science- Shadows  are created when a light source is blocked.

I sent home the results and the comparison to the FALL  PALS . This is one portion of their grade. It is important to continue reviewing sight words daily to enable your child to read  on grade level. Comprehension is also an important part of being able to read on grade level. Ask your child questions about what he/she reads . Please have your child practice writing their first and their last  names correctly and short sentences by sounding out words.

We are excited to welcome Catava Burton, HCPS Educational Specialist, to Muffins with Moms, January 18, from 8-8:30am.

In her “Are You Smarter than Your Child’s Smart Phone?” workshop she will share the latest texting

slang, secret apps, and social media tricks.  Information will also be provided on bullying/cyberbullying,

human trafficking, internet safety, and psychological impact of these issues.  Strategies will be provided

to help parents keep their children safe.  Bring your smart phone!

Please help your child to fill out and color the poster when it is their turn. You can also send in photographs to hang on the poster . A letter will accompany the poster  explaining what is required. Please send this completed poster in the following Monday so your child can share it with the class. I will display it in our classroom and return it home on Friday.

We will learn how to write the numbers and use our “Number sense” to make these numbers in many  different ways:  numeral, number word, tally, ten frame, set,  name one more and one less than each number,  list the  combinations that equal the number of the day,  etc.
