Highlights for week of 10/15/18-10/19/18

Welcome to Mrs. Cunningham’s Kindergarten Class! We are going to have fun this year  “Climbing to Higher Heights of Learning!!!!

PARENTS PLEASE SEND IN A NOTE IF YOU GIVE YOUR CHILD PERMISSION TO GET AN EXTRA SNACK OR DESSERT WHEN THEY BUY THEIR LUNCH.  THIS WAY I WILL KNOW YOU ARE AWARE OF THE EXTRA CHARGE THAT MAY BE PLACED ON YOUR ACCOUNT. SOMETIMES THE CAFETERIA MAY SURPRISE US AND GIVE OUT FREE  ICE CREAM OR A RICE KRISPIE TREAT.

Reminder: Please send in a healthy snack daily for your child. Water bottles are permitted in the classroom. Please make sure the lids are on securely so they do not leak in your child’s backpack.  Also please make sure you label  their snack and  lunch  ( if you send it in)  so your child know the difference .

Language Arts– We will  focus on letters “Pp, Gg” . We will learn their sounds along with how to write  them.  Upper case (Capital)  and lower case alphabet recognition continues to be ongoing.  Also we will discuss the difference between a letter, a word and a sentence.  Please have your child practice writing their first name starting with a capital letter and the rest of the letters  should be written in  lower case. All letters are introduced briefly in the first 26 days. We will then go back and spend more time on each individually. PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening)   begins this week.

Sight words- We will learn this week: he, can, go, back, funny          Please practice memorizing , spelling and writing  these.

Math– We will continue to  focus on Patterns: AB, AAB, ABB, ABC ( identifying , making them with manipulatives and  coloring them)  . We will also look around our environment and find them  ! Patterns  are everywhere!!! Students will identify “the core”, describe, extend, create repeating patterns.

Special thanks to Colin’s mom who came in to do a fun patterning lesson with us this week!!!

Science- Fall Season /  Weather/ Pumpkins –   Students will learn that changes occur over time and at different rates (fast/ slow- wks, months, years). Nature and humans can make changes over time ( weather, people- ht., wt., hair color, buildings- construction, demolition, plants and trees- plant, cut down)

We will do an experiment with pumpkins  and determine whether they sink or float. We will do nonstandard measurement using unifix cubes to determine how tall our pumpkins are. We will also count the number of lines on our pumpkins!!   Our culminating activity will be to wear pajamas and make pancakes  , Yummmm!

“Star Student of the Week” -Samrat was our “Star Student” this past week.  He  made a beautiful poster!  It was fun learning about Samrat’s family and all his interests!!.  Please help your child to fill out and color the poster when it is their turn. You can also send in photographs to hang on the poster . A letter will accompany the poster  explaining what is required. Please send this completed poster in the following Monday so your child can share it with the class. I will display it in our classroom and return it home on Friday.

We will do nonstandard measurement using unifix cubes to determine how tall our apples are.  Our culminating activity will be to make applesauce!!! Yummmm!

Social Studies- We will learn Christopher Columbus was an explorer that came to America .

“Star Student of the Week” -Poojya was our “Star Student” this past week. She made a beautiful poster!  It was fun learning about Poojya’s family and all her interests!!.  Please help your child to fill out and color the poster when it is their turn. You can also send in photographs to hang on the poster . A letter will accompany the poster  explaining what is required. Please send this completed poster in the following Monday so your child can share it with the class. I will display it in our classroom and return it home on Friday.

CTES Back to School Night -( For parents only )Please report to the gym at 6:15.  There will be a short PTA meeting first, then you will report to our classroom # 112 for a 20 minute presentation by  me. I will go over the  upcoming year’s agenda. This is not a time for parent conferences due to the  time constrain .  After this presentation you can go home or go to your next child’s classroom to hear his /her teacher’s presentation.

Please fill out all forms that were in your child’s blue folder and return them on Tuesday.  Please respond to my test email if you have not done so yet. I need to know the email I can use to communicate with you.

 “Star Student of the Week” -I will explain to the class what a ” Star Student”  is.  We will start this the week of 9/24/18.I  will explain this to you at Back to School Night.  Please help your child to fill out and color the poster when it is their turn. You can also send in photographs to hang on the poster . A letter will accompany the poster  explaining what is required. Please send this completed poster in the following Monday so your child can share it with the class. I will display it in our classroom and return it home on Friday.

Readers are asked to bring a book to read or read a teacher-chosen book from our classroom library.

Highlights week of 6/11/18-6/15/18

Wow, I can’t believe this is the LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL!!!! Thank you so much for being very supportive parents. Your children have worked very hard and have progressed so much!!! Please have your child read and write daily over the summer. I will be sending home their Starfall Journals this week. They can continue to write at least a sentence or two daily about what they did that day. Please reemphasize a sentence starts with an upper case letter, there should be  spaces between words and a sentence must end with the correct punctuation. Please also encourage your child to use describing words in their sentences ( size, color, season , etc).

Boosterthon was a tremendous success! Thank you for all your donations! The children loved  all the excitement daily that Castle Quest brought!! There was a great turn out of families Friday evening for the Fun Run!!!

Language Arts– Plays-  Various play parts will be given out to all students to practice. Friday everyone will do their play in front of the class with their classmates. WE HAD SO MUCH FUN DOING THIS LAST FRIDAY!!!! ASK YOUR CHILD ABOUT IT!

This week we will be working  on their Kindergarten Memory Book that will be a treasure when we are done!

Continue to encourage your child to  write  sentences beginning with an upper case letter, using spacing between words, spelling sight words correctly and using correct punctuation at the end of the sentence .  Please have your child practice writing their first and last names starting with an upper case letter and the rest of the letters  should be written in  lower case. Have your child write at least one sentence a day using sight words  starting on the left of the page and going to the right in a straight line.

Please practice memorizing  and spelling all sight words.  By now your child should know at least 50  sight words.  Please practice these daily so your child will not forget them.  The more sight words your child knows the easier it will be for him/ her in first grade.

Reminder : By the end of this last quarter your child should be able to count to 100, count by 10’s to 100 and count backwards from 10-0. They should be able to identify all numbers in random order to 20. All children should know what number comes before , without counting, when given a number between 1 and 10 . They should be able to identify the number after, without counting, when given any number between 0 and 100.  It would be advantageous for your child to practice writing numbers to 30 or higher.  All students will need to identify a  penny, nickel, dime and quarter and tell their values. The students also need to identify how many pennies are equal to a nickel, dime and a  quarter. All students should know the days of the week and the months of the year by now due to the fact we do Calendar everyday. Practice addition and subtraction.
