International Baccalaureate (I.B.) Program

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR RISING 6TH GRADERS:

*The International Baccalaureate (I.B.) Middle Years Program is a specialty program for students who apply and are accepted. If accepted into the program, students would attend Moody Middle School for grades 6-8.

The IB Middle Years Application takes into account:

  1. Advanced MAPS scores in Math and Reading (Spring of 4th grade and Fall of 5th grade scores will be provided by me)
  2. GPA from 4th and 5th grade (all A’s or A’s and B’s expected)
  3. Two teacher recommendations (from 4th and 5th grade teachers)
  4. A 90 minute writing prompt administered by me at Skipwith
    1. The writing prompt is administered to every student applying to the IB Program across the county

Please remember that his program is not the best “fit” for everyone. It is considered a very challenging and advanced program for students who are:

  1. Inquirers– have a natural curiosity  and are interested in research and showing an independence in learning.
  2. Knowledgeable-they explore concepts, ideas, and issues that have a global significance
  3. Thinkers-they exercise initiative in applying thinking skills critically and creatively to recognize and approach complex problems
  4. Communicators-they understand and express ideas and information confidently
  5.  Principled-they act with integrity and honest with a strong sense of fairness, justice, and respect
  6. Open-minded-they understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories and want to explore the values and traditions of others
  7. Caring-they show empathy, compassion, and respect towards the needs and feelings of others
  8. Risk-takers-they approach unfamiliar situations and uncertainty with courage and forethought
  9. Balanced– they understand the importance of intellectual, physical, and emotional balance
  10. Reflective-they give thoughtful consideration to their own learning experience

If your child does apply for the I.B. program at Moody Middle School they should STILL proceed as if they were going to Quioccasin Middle School. Once a student finds out that he/ she has been accepted (EARLY MARCH, 2021), then the necessary changes will be made, as there is a different procedure for I.B. scheduling/ course selections.

Middle School Transition can be one of the most challenging transitions in a child’s life. With proper preparation and support, this transition can change from stressful to a WONDERFUL and EXCITING “rite of passage” for you and your child!
