Film depicts 60s Virginia injustice

Juniors and seniors in the Center for Communications and Media Relations visited BowTie Cinemas to view “Loving,” the story of Mildred and Richard Loving.

Students received their tickets from the Director of the Virginia Film Office, Andy Edmunds, who spoke with them at school after they had seen the film.

In the 60s, Mildred and Richard Loving married. Because Mildred was of African and Native American descent and Richard was white, they were in violation of Virginia’s Racial Integrity Act. They challenged this law, which eventually led to the Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia in 1967. Thereafter, racial restrictions on marriage were eliminated.

Junior Paris Dunaway said the heartwarming movie showed the couple’s love for each other.

“It was empowering for me because it showed that you shouldn’t give up on what you love,” Paris said.

Senior Rafael Wells said the movie was realistic and held his attention.

“Every time I thought ‘this is the best part,’ another part came up,” Rafael said.

Senior Sierra Spain had heard of the Loving story through her friends.

“It was filmed in Richmond, and there was a lot of local history. It’s kind of cool to see your hometown transformed on the big screen,” Sierra said.

When Mr. Edmunds visited the CFCMR, he gave background information on the movie’s production and shared insights into the film industry.

Junior Zaya Anderson said he heard about Mr. Edmund’s job and celebrities he’s worked with.

“One time he had to get a law passed so that Harrison Ford could land his helicopter close to the set,” Zaya said.

Advanced Communications teacher Lesley St. James said the class jumped at the opportunity to see the film.

“It’s a really great example of how the film industry isn’t just located in New York, California or Vancouver, and there are  opportunities everywhere to get involved with the industry,” Mrs. St. James said.
