Column: Girls trade makeup for shoulder pads

by Laura Eley

Two girls–freshman Rebecca Childress and sophomore Sarah Felkner– are dressing out for JV football, and pigs are flying.

Don’t expect Porky the Pig to zoom past your window. It’s just that girls playing football or any male-dominated sport is usually in the same category as pigs flying, although the chance of a girl being on a football team is slightly higher than the chance of Miss Piggy taking flight.

Girls are supposed to participate at football games as cheerleaders, dancers, pep squad members, band members, water girls or managers. I intend no offense to any girl who participates in any of those things. Girls are creating their own paths by playing or participating in male-dominated activities.

The girls on the Blue Devil squad are kickers and wide receivers. They are not bench riders. They are not water girls. They are not managers. They are actual players who get game time. They are players who proudly wear the Blue Devil uniform every Thursday.

I’m proud to be a girl because girls are taking over. So boys, either help us get to the top or step aside.
