After seven years teaching history, Karin Castillo is writing a page in her own history book.

Ms. Castillo, a former world history and government teacher, is now an administrative intern.

“I thought I could better support students as far as discipline and home issues,” Ms. Castillo said.  “I felt I could better reach them as an administrator.”

Principal Tracie Omohundro said Ms. Castillo is a perfect fit for the job.

“She’s an extremely hard worker,” Mrs. Omohundro said.  “She’s eager to learn things that she doesn’t already know or learn more about things that she does know.”

Ms. Castillo works closely with counselor Alicia Fuse in the School Counseling Department.

“She’s progressed extremely well,” Ms. Fuse said.  “She’s willing to ask questions and ask other people for help when she needs it.”

Ms. Castillo has three children.  She said her job and home life keep her busy, but she does her best to keep them separate.

“I have to leave home at home and work at work,” Ms. Castillo said.

Before working at Varina, Ms. Castillo served in the military, and she taught history for three years in Queens, New York. She has been at Varina for four years, and students said she has had a major impact.

“People can tell when they say Ms. Castillo’s name to me, my face lights up,” senior Amber Blair said.

Ms. Castillo has settled into her new office and new duties as an administrator.   She said she hopes to spend more time in the classroom helping teachers.

“My favorite part is when you’re able to reach a student, make them see something they perhaps didn’t see previously,” Ms. Castillo said.
