What’s Happening This Week

In math this week we are working on the strands of equality and associative property. Some of this will be a review for students (equality), but the associative property is new. We will practice throughout the week.

In reading we continue with main idea. Be on the lookout for main idea assignments for reading homework.

We are back to Virginia Studies and the students are very happy about this. We will learn about Virginia’s Native People. You already have a study guide for this, but I am going to send home an additional study guide that focuses solely on Native Virginians. Homework will be a Virginia Studies that is due on Friday.

What’s Happening in Room 113

Parents,

In math we are working on word problems. This is a traditionally difficult area for students, but we are doing a lot of guided practice. Ask your child to try and explain the process we have been learning.

We have jumped off the Virginia Studies wagon for a couple of weeks to learn about scientific investigation and weather. We are working through the scientific method by conducting experiments and students are doing weather research that will be turned into a slide show.

Back To Work

Parents,

We continue to work on classroom behavior and work expectations. Students are doing a great job in learning the routines and what is expected of them. I have enjoyed getting to know each of their little personalities.

In Virginia Studies we continue to work on learning Virginia’s bordering states and regions. Please be sure to review this information with your child and do not wait until the day before the test. Next, we will add the major waterways and cities to what we have already learned.

In Math place value is our focus. We have discussed the place and value of given digits. We have also worked on rounding and comparing numbers. Students will be tested on this information Wednesday.

We have begun homework routines, which includes me checking to make sure assignments are completed. Remember that completed homework will be averaged at the end of the nine weeks for a test grade.

Please be sure to click around the links at the top of the page for additional helpful information. There are links to websites for practice or just more information on a topic.

Snow, Snow and More Snow!

I hope everyone is safe and cozy in their homes.  I, like yourselves, do not know when students will return to school.  With that being said I would like to strongly encourage reviewing some of the newer concepts we have been studying.  In math it is very important that students continue practicing with fractions (ordering, comparing, improper to mixed, mixed to improper, factors, multiples and last up to this point, simplifying).   This is traditionally a difficult unit for students and they will need continued exposure and practice.  Also, please have your child read over their Virginia Studies notes each day.  When we return, students will take mid-year benchmarks in these subjects, along with reading, that will cover all of the material we have learned the first half of the year.  PLEASE do not wait until the last minute to study.

See you soon and enjoy a little rest!
