2013-2014 “My Plate”

Mrs. Pierce’s fifth grade class worked on a Project Based Learning Activity in their art and physical education classes. They learned about “MyPlate” which is the current nutrition guide published by the United States Department of Agriculture.

In art class, the students conducted research about the five food groups and special types of diets such as gluten-free, vegetarian, diabetic, and lactose intolerant. Then they created ceramic plates of food showing balanced meals specific to each diet. Next they displayed their 3-D projects and presented them to Mrs. Water’s class. The first graders enjoyed rotating to the different tables learning about special diets.

This was a great learning experience for both the first grade and fifth grade students of Springfield Park Elementary!
